Take care of your skin and apply sun protection anytime during the year, whether you’re out skiing, swimming, waiting at a bus stop, or mowing the lawn. Although studies have shown that brief exposure to the sun has health benefits, prolonged exposure to its harsh ultraviolet (UV) rays can be harmful. The effects of UVA rays cause premature aging, spots and wrinkles while UVB rays can lead to the development of UV -related skin cancers. While the comfortable warmth of the sun may feel nice, it is very important to apply the right sun protection. Choose a combination product with a broad-spectrum SPF that blocks UVA and UVB rays and moisturizes your skin. There are many products available, which are non-greasy, PABA-free, water-resistant, have natural sun filters that protect against UVA and UVB rays, and help repair and revitalize your skin. For the more active type, a dry, sports spray is handy and perfect for covering those hard to reach areas. To get a great tan without soaking in the rays, choose a tanning lotion that can help you develop a healthy, natural-looking tan in minutes without having to risk getting red and sun burnt. After sun exposure, remember to continue protecting your skin with an anti-inflammatory, moisturizing cream specifically made to soothe and relieve burns, rashes and short-term sun damage. Applying sun protection daily can help you maintain your skin at any age. Give me strength by Sam Graci Strengthen your bones for better posture, mobility – even hair, nails and teeth Studies show we naturally begin to lose bone density starting in our early 30s. Early signs include weak nails, brittle hair, poor tooth enamel, stiff necks and lower back problems. If not corrected by diet or supplementation, we experience decreased mobility and poor posture, along with increased risk for fractures and disease such as osteoporosis. Relying on Calcium alone is not enough Leading research shows Calcium on its own is no longer the ‘gold standard’ for healthy bones. What’s more, despite the many high-dose Calcium supplements, studies show the body most effectively metabolizes single doses of up to 500mg of Calcium. Furthermore, without the presence of Vitamin D3 and Magnesium, Calcium absorption is less efficient. (Forshee, et al. J Am Coll Nutr 2006) The bone-building diet is greener than you think Studies show a diet rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants and low in acidic foods (such as animal protein and processed foods) is your best bone -building solution. Foods such as dark leafy greens promote a healthier pH level, reduce oxidative stress and improve your body’s ability to absorb nutrients. This helps to explain why populations who consume very little dairy but lots of green plant foods, have very low rates of osteoporosis. Green plants are the best foods for calcium absorption. In fact, recent studies conducted at the University of Toronto, show there are specific nutrients that are vitally important for bone health, including: Vitamin K found in dark leafy greens, Calcium formate and bisglycinate (as well as citrate-malate), Magnesium, Vitamin D3, Folic Acid and lycopene –found in tomatoes. Unfortunately, men and women do not get these nutrients from our daily diet, making supplementation vitally important. Do you need a Multivitamin? by Nelson Narciso, A.M.D. Why do we need a multi? Sadly, heavily processed, nutrient poor foods dominate the diets of many. We consume countless empty calories and think that by simply eating just a few servings of fruits and vegetables we’re protected. Many of today’s foods are processed, preserved, stored and cooked in ways that further limit their nutrient levels. To add further insult to injury countless studies have shown that food irradiation, microwaving, poor soil nutrient levels are all major players in the decline of today’s foods. Although multivitamins are designed to supplement and not replace a balanced diet, the need for this support has never been so great! What are the health benefits of a multi? After 20 years of opposition to the use of multivitamins by the medical establishment the overwhelming positive research has forced them to finally stand up and take notice. Scientific evidence published in many of the world’s most prestigious medical journals like the Journal of the American Medical Association, have shown that multivitamins can lower the risk of many of today’s diseases. Cancer, heart disease, IQ, memory, immunity, and behaviour can all be impacted by simply using a quality multivitamin. What should we look for in a multi? Many multivitamins on the market today take a one-size fits all approach. Based on our age and gender, however, multivitamins should cater to our individual needs. For this reason look for multivitamins that are designed specifically for your gender, age and level of activity. Despite the popularity and convenience of the “high potency one-a-day” tablet most experts agree that one-a-days don’t offer the same quality and level of protection you get from a three-a-day. Divided doses throughout the day allow for significantly better absorption. One-a-day’s are also typically loaded with binders, fillers, flow agents, preservatives and coatings that in many cases restrict absorption and increase the risk of interactions. Look for natural source vitamins like vitamin E which in its natural form is known as d-alpha tocopherol and in its synthetic form dl-alpha tocopherol. Look for vitamins that offer superior absorption like vitamin D3 instead of D2. Vitamin D3 is recognized as the superior form of vitamin D. Minerals should be bound to organic acids like citrate instead of the more poorly absorbed carbonates and oxides. Lastly supportive co-factors like resveratrol, CoQ10, glutathione, etc., can offer an added measure of protection. Although using a multivitamin is no substitute for a balanced diet it certainly can act as an insurance policy against deficiency and ultimately disease! The Real Breakfast of Champions… Plant-based foods! by Brendan Brazier We all know that breakfast is important to help fuel the day’s activity. Physically and mentally, we’ll falter later in the day if nutrients in a balanced ratio aren’t consumed in the early part of the day. High-quality carbohydrates such as fruit is a prime fuel source for both muscles and the brain. In fact, the brain needs simple carbohydrates to function efficiently. One challenge, however, is that fruit consumed alone will “burn” quickly, resulting in an energy crash. A simple solution is to consume fibre, essential fatty acids and complete protein along with the fruit. In doing so, a crash will not occur. The result will be Relieves joint pain “I’m active everyday and Joints-First liquid makes a big difference. If I forget to take it, my body lets me know – I can’t be without it.” M. Zernel, Norfolk, ON steady, constant stream of energy for body and brain without the need to eat again until the early afternoon. The most practical and convenient way to do this is by making a nutrient-dense breakfast smoothie. A variety of fresh fruit is a good base. Plant-based, alkaline forming protein is optimal. Obtained from a variety of sources to balance the amino acid profile, an excellent synergistic combination is hemp protein, pea protein and rice protein. Milled flax is a good source of essential fatty acids. Fibre will be naturally occurring in the whole food protein sources as well as in the flax, so there is no need to add fibre specifically. To pack in extra nutrients, add greens such as spirulina or blend in a few leafs of kale. The multi-vitamin that keeps up with your active lifestyle!
