Provide answers only in space provided, do not attach additional sheets.
Write clearly to ensure full credit for your answers. Write the first letter of your surname in box above.
(1, 1 pt ea) Provide the summary statistics for the following set of numbers below:
(Note: if the answer is not an integer, you must provide the value to three decimal places)s

Coefficient of variation (population) =
30.170
Coefficient of variation (sample) =
31.309
(2, 3 pts ea) Verbally describe the shape of the distribution based upon your calculated skewness and excess kurtosis:
(a) First, describe it using the appropriate technical terms from the following list:
platykurtic, mesokurtic, leptokurtic, skewed left, symmetric, skewed right.
The data is skewed right and leptokurtic
(b) Second, describe it verbally like you would to a liberal arts major.
The data has a distribution that is pointier than the bell-curve (normal distribution) with a longer tail
to the right than to the left.
(3, 3 pts ea) The mean and median both estimate the "average" of a sample. In 2013 the US mean and median
household incomes were approximately $73,767 and $52,250 respectively.
(a) What does the difference between the mean and median imply for the distribution of
incomes in the US? (Use the term "skew" correctly in your answer)
The distribution is skewed right, there are a few people making a TON of money
while most people make less than the mean
(b) Which measure do you think is more relevant and why?
Two answers are valid. You can argue that the mean makes more sense because multiplying it by the
number of people gives the size of the overall economy. You could also argue that the median is better
because it gives you a sense of what the income of a "typical" person.
