What is the
Endocrine System
Regulates long term changes in
the body such as growth and
development
Endocrine Gland – a group of organs that produce and release
chemical substances that signal changes in other parts of the body
Complete endocrine vocabulary using pages 460 - 463
Male Reproductive System
Function is to produce sex hormones, to
produce and store sperm, and to deliver
sperm to the female reproductive system
external sex organ
through which sperm
leaves the male

Male Reproductive Vocab
• Sperm – male reproductive cells
• Testes – male reproductive glands
• Testosterone – male sex hormone, affects
the production of sperm
_____4______
The prostate gland adds a fluid that protects the
sperm.
_____2______
Sperm travel through the vas deferens to the seminal
vesicle.
______1_____
Sperm are produced in the testes. They mature and are stored
in the epididymis.
_____3______
Seminal vesicles add a fluid that provides a source of energy
for the active sperm.
____5_______
The bulbourethral glands add a fluid that protects sperm from
the acidic conditions in the urethra.

Important Facts:
• Because they are located outside of the body, the
temperature of the testes is a few degrees lower then
the rest of the body. Sperm need this lower
temperature to develop properly and survive.
• Several million (40-600 million) sperm are released
during one ejaculation. It take ONE to fertilize an egg.
• Caring for the male reproductive system involves
cleanliness, sexual abstinence, protection from
trauma, self-exams, and regular medical checkups
Female Reproductive System
The functions of the female reproductive system are to
produce sex hormones, to produce eggs, and to
provide a nourishing environment in which a fertilized
egg can develop into a baby.
Hollow, muscular
organ where baby
develops (womb)
Passageways that
carry eggs away
from ovaries
Birth canal,
leads from
uterus to outside
of the body
The Menstrual Cycle
•During the menstrual cycle, an ovary releases a mature
egg. The egg travels to the uterus. If the egg is not
fertilized, the uterine lining is shed and a new cycle
begins
•Caring for the female reproductive system involves
cleanliness, sexual abstinence, prompt treatment for
infections, self-exams, and regular medical checkups.
•Once a female has reached puberty, it is recommended to
have a yearly check up by a gynecologist.
•During the yearly exam the doctor will perform a Pap
smear, this is when a sample of cells is taken from the
cervix.
Female Reproductive Vocab
• Ova – the female reproductive cells, eggs
• Ovaries – reproductive glands in which
eggs are produced
• Estrogen – female sex hormone that
activates physical changes at puberty
• Progesterone – activates changes in women
before and during pregnancy
• Ovulation – ripened egg is released once a
month
Breast and Testicular Awarness
Page 476-477
Importance of self-exams
• Breast cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in women
and cause of cancer deaths
• In 2010 :
– 206,966 women and 2,039 men in the United States were
diagnosed with breast cancer.
– 40,996 women and 439 men in the United States died from breast
cancer.
• Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among men
between 15 and 34.
• In 2013 there are:
– About 7,920 new cases of testicular cancer will be diagnosed.
– About 370 men will die of testicular cancer.
