Objective: 1) Provide an example of an autotroph and a heterotroph. 2) Illustrate how ATP is formed and broken down. http://www.flickr.com/photos/seantubridy/389310649/ Defining Photosynthesis: CO2 + H2O + sunlight Glucose and O2 Autotrophs Autotrophs: Organisms that use photosynthesis (or inorganic substances) to make organic substances (food). Examples of Autotrophs: #1 Plants #2 Some bacteria and protists. #3 Some autotrophs, such as bacteria found along the bottom of the ocean, use chemical energy from inorganic chemicals to make organic compounds. 1 Heterotrophs Cellular respiration is almost the opposite of photosynthesis. Defining Cellular Respiration: Glucose and O2 CO2 + H2O + ATP Heterotrophs: Organisms that get their energy by consuming other organisms. Example: 1) You 2) All animals KEY CONCEPT Glucose (from photosynthesis) ATP (from cellular respiration) 1. ATP is the fuel of the cell. It is made from Glucose which is refined by cellular respiration. 2. Energy is Stored when a phosphate group is added to ADP to make ATP. 3. Energy is Released when ATP is split to make ADP and a phosphate group 2 ATP Synthase: an enzyme in mitochondria and chloroplasts that makes ATP. H+ makes it work. 3
