Pointing Music Book Intro
Unlike many instruments, the guitar has multiple places to play the same note. Because of this, there are different
ways to move around the instrument. This music book explores four of them; Single String, Down the Neck,
Across the Neck, Up the Neck. We will use the modes of the C Major Scale to explore these ways to move around
the guitar.
Ways to move on the Guitar:
Single String - You will play the Major Scale modes and Triad Arpeggio's on each of the individual 6 strings.
Down the Neck - You will play the Major Scale modes and Triad Arpeggio's across the 6 strings towards the
guitars headstock.
Across the Neck - You will play the Major Scale modes and Triad Arpeggio's directly across the 6 strings.
Up the Neck - You will play the Major Scale modes and Triad Arpeggio's across the 6 strings towards the guitars
body.
Major Scale Modes:
Ionian Mode: C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C. This is the Major Scale. This book will explore the Ionian mode in the key of C.
If you find the note C on the piano, and play all the white keys up till you get to the next C, you will have played
the Ionian mode. This yields the notes; 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,1.
Triad: The triad built off the Ionian mode in C is a Major Triad: C,E,G
Dorian Mode: D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D. If you find the note D on the piano, and play all the white keys up to the next D,
you will have played the dorian mode. This yields the notes; 1,2,b3,4,5,6,b7,1
Triad: The triad built off the dorian mode in D is a minor triad: D,F,A
Phrygian Mode: E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E. If you find the note E on the piano, and play all the white keys up to the next
E, you will have played the phrygian mode. This yields the notes; 1,b2,b3,4,5,b6,b7,1
Triad: The triad built off the phrygian mode in E is a minor triad: E,G,B
Lydian Mode: F,G,A,B,C,D,E,F. If you find the note F on the piano, and play all the white keys up to the next F,
you will have played the Lydian mode. This yields the notes; 1,2,3,#4,5,6,7,1
Triad: The triad built off the Lydian mode in F is a Major triad: F,A,C
Mixolydian Mode: G,A,B,C,D,E,F,G. If you find the note G on the piano, and play all the white keys up to the
next G, you will have played the Mixolydian mode. This yields the notes; 1,2,3,4,5,6,b7,1
Triad: The triad built off the Mixolydian mode in G is a Major triad: G,B,D
Aeolian Mode: A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A. If you find the note A on the piano, and play all the white keys up to the next A,
you will have played the aeolian mode. This yields the notes; 1,2,b3,4,5,b6,b7,1
Triad: The triad built off the aeolian mode in A is a minor triad: A,C,E
Locrian Mode: B,C,D,E,F,G,A,B. If you find the note B on the piano, and play all the white keys up to the next B,
you will have played the locrian mode. This yields the notes; 1,b2,b3,4,b5,b6,b7,1
Triad: The triad built off the locrian mode in B is a diminished triad: B,D,F
This approach is to help you familiarize yourself with the guitar. To be able to play all the songs you love with
more knowledge of the ways you can move.
