Victor Hugo’s novel Les Misérables was published in 1861. About the novel he wrote, “Les Misérables is written
for a universal audience. It addresses England as well as Spain, France, as well as Germany... the republics
that harbor slaves as well as empires that have serfs. Social problems go beyond frontiers. Humankind’s
wounds, those huge sores that litter the world, do not stop at the blue and red lines drawn on maps. Wherever
men go in ignorance or despair, wherever women sell themselves for bread, wherever children lack a book to
learn from or a warm hearth, Les Misérables knocks at the door and says ‘open up, I am here.’” The
revolutionary quality of the novel made it a financial success in its own time and for succeeding generations.
However, critical acclaim took a long time in coming. Looked down upon by the church and governments,
Les Misérables (roughly translated to mean the downtrodden or oppressed) the novel accomplished what the
content of the novel preached: those that are despised by the powers that be can overcome that oppression
through the love and devotion of the common man. Les Misérables, translated into many languages, has been
read and loved by people across the world. With its epic scope, Les Misérables’ characters and events have the
ability to endear themselves to the reader and foster an impassioned response. In an immensely complex and
convoluted text, Hugo created the simplest of commentaries to his audience: “to love another person is to see
the face of God.” From this simplest of human needs: to love and be loved, Hugo created a text that twists
and turns until almost all of the major characters have sacrificed themselves for the person they love. Those
who cannot make this conversion are doomed to suicide or a life in the sewers. It is this message that
resonates with generation after generation and makes this one of the best selling and most loved novels.
In the late 1970s, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, a French composer and lyricist, undertook the
task of turning this epic, 1,200 page novel into a musical. Their first attempt was considerably shorter and less
detailed than the product we now know. The story ended at the barricade; Javert’s suicide and Cosette and
Marius’ wedding were left implied. However, the French audience, knowing the novel so well, was able to
piece the rest together. In 1981 Cameron Mackintosh, a British theatre producer, was given the French
album, adorned with the now famous Cosette logo, and was instantly enrapt. “It was an instant combustible
decision. By the fourth track I was wildly excited.” For the next four years, the creation of Les Misérables the
Musical would be his obsession. On October 8th, 1985, the musical opened in the Barbican theatre in
London and mirrored the reception of the novel. It played to standing ovations, but the reviews were
anything but flattering. “A witless and synthetic entertainment.” “The music is adequate if conventional and
unmemorable, the lyrics uninspiring and at times bathetic.” Mackintosh thought about cutting his costs,
closing down the production, and dooming the musical to be forever unknown. However, the musical proved
to be every bit as resilient as the novel and once again showed that the love of the people would overcome
those who were perceived to be the “experts” or the powers that be of theatre. After moving to the Palace

Theatre in London, Les Misérables played to sold out shows and standing ovations for more than five years and
has been translated and played to audiences in countries throughout the world. It is the people’s passion for
this story that has made it “The world’s most loved musical.”
As we embark on this mission to bring this remarkable piece of theatre to the Festival, it is that same passion
that drives us: the passion to serve the story, the passion to dedicate oneself to the cause, the passion not only
to dazzle with song, but also to impel with thought. From its earliest origins, theatre has been a tool not only
to entertain but also to educate, to be an impetus to action, to be a spark to change, to be a means to improve
not just your life, but also the lives of those with whom you work and those who see the final product.
The powerful final words of Les Misérables echo this ideology: “Will you join in our crusade?/ Who will be
strong and stand with me?/ Somewhere beyond the barricade/ Is there a world you long to see? Do you hear
the people sing?/ Say do you hear the distant drums?/ It is the future that they bring/ When tomorrow
comes.” We, the directors of Les Misérables, are looking for people who are willing to passionately dedicate
themselves to this cause.
Les Misérables requires strong vocal performers who have excellent physicality. Due to
the demanding nature of the show, the more vocally demanding roles will, in all
likelihood, be double cast to preserve voices. All other considerations are being taken to
ensure that no voices are damaged. In addition, the crew needs to be full of problemsolvers. Our instrumental musicians must have endurance and be of symphonic caliber.
Our hope is that the experience of this audition will be a valuable learning tool for everyone
who auditions or interviews. We encourage you to have your best students look over the
enclosed materials and plan to apply. They need to be aware of:

ALL-STATE PRODUCTION COMMON QUESTIONS
Q: Can I apply in more than one area?
A: Yes, you may. Be sure that you are truly interested in being considered in each area. While we may
consider your preference, you will be placed primarily according to the good of the show, not according to
your preference.
Q: Do I need a résumé?
A: Of course you do. A résumé is a key component of any job interview. PLEASE FOLLOW THE
RÉSUMÉ GUIDELINES AND VIEW SAMPLE RÉSUMÉS AT: www.illinoistheatrefest.org/all-state
Q: Where will auditions take place?
A: Actor auditions will take place at either Champaign Centennial High School or John Hersey High School.
Tech Crew and Musician applicants will not have initial live on-site auditions or interviews. Tech Crew
applicants must send in a one-page essay along with their resume and application materials. Musicians must
send in a tape or CD of their instrumental audition along with their resume and application materials.
Q: Can I do other things at the Theatre Festival?
A: No. Being a part of the All-State ensemble will be a full-time job while you’re at the Festival. There is one
exception: YOU ARE ABLE TO ATTEND THE COLLEGE AUDITIONS.
Q: Can I do other shows at my school if I’m in the All-State ensemble?
A: That depends on your school’s production schedule. Being a part of the All-State show is a major
commitment. You must be available for ALL rehearsals; we will not make exceptions. Be clear on your
obligations to your school before you apply.
Q: Is there an application fee?
A: Yes. $10. You may pay an additional $1 for an audition CD.
Q: What are the other costs?
A: All ensemble members will be responsible for costs incurred for meals, lodging at auditions, all rehearsals,
and at the Festival. Adding up all the weekends involved: food, lodging, and Festival expenses will be no
more than $425.
Q: How can I get help with these expenses?
A: You may be able to find a “sponsor” in your community who could help defray the cost. At some schools,
the administration will support your All-State production participation the same as they would support an allstate athlete. If you are selected for the ensemble, we will send a letter to your principal suggesting he/she
consider this kind of financial support. We will also provide you a “tips for fundraising” sheet. WE HAVE A
LONG HISTORY OF SUCCESSFUL INDIVIDUAL STUDENT FUND-RAISING AND SPONSORSHIP.
Q: Do I have to be at all the rehearsals?
A: Yes, plan on it. Each All-State ensemble member is expected to attend every scheduled rehearsal, and of
course, the Festival performances. Check your school and family calendars. BE PROMPT. We will begin at
the specified call-time.
Q: Will you really kick me out of the show for not coming to rehearsals?
A: Yes.
Q: If I have conflicts with the schedule, should I audition?
A: No. The All-State production process is intense. And, many people want to be a part of it. We have to
make positions available to those who are truly able to commit to the entire process.

ALL-STATE ACTOR INFORMATION
Les Misérables is a unique musical because there is no dialogue. In most musicals the songs are an extension or a
highlight of the story; in Les Misérables it is the story. Therefore, the show demands that its performers understand that
this is not just about song and musicality, but it is about conveying a story through song. The performers must also
understand how physicality adds to the text to convey the complete story. Therefore, we are not looking for the best
singers, but, instead, are looking for performers who can best convey the story through song.
For the Audition: Actors are asked to prepare two songs from the show. Everyone will sing a portion of the final
song of the show and then have a choice from four or five pre-chosen songs. Please plan on performing this piece
with the same amount of acting with which you rehearse and perform a monologue or scene. After we receive your
application, we will send you an audition packet that includes music, audition times, directions, and the audition
CD (if you have purchased it). WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU PURCHASE THIS CD BECAUSE IT WILL
CONTAIN THE MUSIC EXACTLY AS IT WILL BE PLAYED AT YOUR AUDITION. You will also be asked
to do a movement, not a dance, audition.
Actors should dress comfortably and be prepared to move. Loose fitting clothes are suggested such as sweat clothes,
gym shorts, leotards, etc. Even more important, be sure to wear shoes that you can move in.
Resumes and Headshots:
Each actor auditioning must have these two things sent to us with your application:
1. A performance resume. Your resume should include all performances and tech related experiences you’ve had
prior to the audition. It also should be organized and easy to read. Include training background in acting,
dance, movement, voice, musical instruments, etc. Above all, be honest on your resume.

A headshot photograph. This does not need to be a professionally-taken headshot. The photo should be at least
3”x5” and be a current portrait-type shot of your face. Make sure you are the only one in the picture. The photo
will not be returned to you.
Primary Requirements
• Cast – Diverse 40-50 member Ensemble Cast. Actors must be able to act, sing, and move well.
• A student may audition as cast, crew, and musician. If auditioning for multiple areas, indicate your preference
with one (1) being your first choice. You will be placed accordingly, for the good of the production. DO NOT
audition for more than one area if you don’t wish to be considered seriously for each.
• Please read the individual applications carefully and provide the required signature on EACH form.
• Members of the All-State production may not participate in another performance at the Festival (except
college/university auditions.).
• All cast, crew, and musicians must provide their own transportation to the audition site, all rehearsals or work
calls, and the Festival.
• All cast, crew, and musicians will be responsible for costs incurred for meals and lodging at all rehearsals, work
calls, the Festival itself, and the auditions. Food, lodging, and Festival expenses are approximately $425.
NOTE: This $425 amount is the maximum. It is our hope for it to be much less.
• Each cast, crew, and musicians are expected to attend every rehearsal or work call. Promptness and appropriate
behavior will be expected. Check school calendars for conflicts, i.e., homecoming, school productions, etc.
• If you cannot attend ALL of the scheduled rehearsals or work calls, please do not audition.
• You will not be considered for All-State participation unless all applications requirements are complete.

ALL-STATE TECH CREW INFORMATION
Les Misérables is a fast paced, non-stop show that requires a technical staff that is dedicated to all aspects of the
production. We are looking for those students who will add their talents to enhance the overall production. This
production is to be an educational endeavor that is open equally to those who have had vast opportunities and those who
have had more limited experiences. In short, we are more interested in your attitude and willingness to learn and work
than your expansive resume. Note that there will NOT be on-site, face-to-face interviews for tech crew positions.
Crew positions will include:
Stage Manager – techie responsible for running the show
Lighting Crew -- designing, hanging, programming,
running
Sound Crew – microphones, sound effects
Set Construction -- building, painting
Props -- designing, building
Costumes -- sewing, altering
Make-up -- basic stage make-up, beards, hair
Staff Assistants -- one assistant producer and one
assistant director
You may, if you want to, send along with the resume and essay some photographs of work on sets,
lights, costumes, etc. that you have done in the past. Do not feel, however, that you will not be
considered if you do not have an “impressive portfolio.” Remember, the staff is more interested in
your attitude and desire to learn and work than what you have already accomplished.
Resumes and Headshots: Each crew member must have these two things sent to us with your application and essay.
1. A technical resume. Your resume should include all tech-related and performance experiences you’ve had prior to
the interview. It also should be organized and easy to read. Include training background in tech and
performance-related areas. Above all, be honest on your resume.

A photograph/headshot. This does not need to be a professionally-taken headshot. The photo should be at least
3x5 and be a current portrait-type shot of your face. Make sure you are the only one in the picture. The photo
will not be returned to you.

what assets you would bring to the production. How will you make the Les Misérables experience better?

Musician Audition Requirements
The following pieces must be recorded to a cassette tape or CD and mailed to the All-State Producer by April 21, 2006.
PERCUSSION:
1) On drum set, compose or improvise three 30-second selections of the following:
(a) A joyous dance in 3/4; (b) a majestic procession in 5/4; (c) An exciting battle scene in 7/8. Be creative!
2) On mallets, record one 2 minute exercise, etude, or solo demonstrating your technical facility.
WINDS:
1) Record two contrasting selections, not to exceed 2 minutes each. Selections may include concerti, solos or etudes, or
exercises.
2) Also, record the IMEA Scale audition material.
STRINGS:
1) Record two contrasting selections of a solo or etude, not to exceed two minutes each.
GUITAR:
1) Record two selections not to exceed two minutes each:

Primary Requirements
• A student may audition as cast, crew, and musician. If auditioning for multiple areas, indicate your preference
with one (1) being your first choice. You will be placed accordingly, for the good of the production. DO NOT
audition for more than one area if you don’t wish to be considered seriously for each.
• Please read the individual applications carefully and provide the required signature on EACH form.
• Members of the All-State production may not participate in another performance at the Festival (except
college/university auditions.).
• All cast, crew, and musicians must provide their own transportation to all rehearsals or work calls and the
Festival.
• All cast, crew, and musicians will be responsible for costs incurred for meals and lodging at all rehearsals, work
calls, the Festival itself, and the auditions. Food, lodging, and Festival expenses are approximately $425.
NOTE: This $425 amount is the maximum. It is our hope for it to be much less.
• All cast, crew, and musicians are expected to attend every rehearsal or work call. Promptness and appropriate
behavior will be expected. Check school calendars for conflicts, i.e., homecoming, school productions, etc.
• If you cannot attend ALL of the scheduled rehearsals or work calls, please do not audition.
• You will not be considered for All-State participation unless all applications requirements are complete.
