Verbals
VERBALS are verb forms that take on the jobs of other parts of speech. There are
three types of verbals.
Infinitives – the word to plus a verb. Infinitives can be used as a noun,
adjective, or adverb.
example: Her dream is to dance in the Nutcracker.
Gerunds – a verb ending in –ing that is used as a noun
example: Swimming is my favorite summer sport.
Participles – a verb form usually ending in –ing or –ed that is used as an adjective.
example: She carefully opened the elaborately wrapped gift.
Identify the underlined word in each sentence below by writing I (for infinitive),
G (for gerund), or P (for participle).
