Review of Photosynthesis
Step 1: Light Reaction
•Light is absorbed by chlorophyll in the
photocenters.
•Water molecules are split in the ETC. This
produces:
• i. H+ and electrons (e-)
• ii. Oxygen gas is released
• iii. ATP and NADPH are made
Step 2: Calvin Cycle
•This reaction uses:
• ATP and NADPH from the
Light Reaction and CO2 from
the atmosphere
•The product is glucose (C6H12O6)
What happens to the glucose?
•Some will be used for energy for the
plant
•The unused (excess) will be stored as
starch (ex: potatoes)

•Using glucose to produce ATP
for cells
•Occurs in the cytoplasm and
mitochondria

Two Types of Cellular Respiration
1. Aerobic: needs O2; produces 38 ATP’s for
each glucose molecule.
• Type of respiration most organisms use

2. Anaerobic: does NOT need O2, produces 2 ATP’s for each
glucose molecule.
• Bacteria living in environments with no O2
• Yeast undergoing fermentation
• Muscles that have a lack of oxygen, also produces lactic acid
which causes sore muscles
