Electricity, Conductors and Insulators (4.6B,C) By Mr. Cramer Student Expectations •The student is expected to differentiate between conductors and insulators; AND demonstrate that electricity travels in a closed path, creating an electrical circuit, and explore an electromagnetic field. Important Ideas • Conductors allow energy to pass, while insulators prevent energy from passing. • Electricity travels in a closed path called a complete circuit. • Electromagnetic fields can be created by passing electricity through a wire and can be turned on and off. Vocabulary • Conductor • Insulator • Electric Current • Electromagnetic Field • Closed Circuit • Open Circuit • Electric Circuit • Electricity Insulator • An insulator prevents electric current and heat from flowing. Insulator (plastic) Conductor (metal) Other Insulators • Common insulators are: Plastic Rubber Wood Glass Conductor • A conductor is material that allows electric current or heat to flow easily. Insulator Conductor (metal) Other Conductors Metals like: Copper Aluminum Gold Silver Conductors are used in cooking. • Cooking pots and pans are made out of metal so that they conduct heat and are able to tolerate high temperatures. List of Conductors and Insulators Closed Circuit • A closed circuit is a pathway that allows an electrical current to flow freely. Open Circuit • An open circuit is a pathway that prevents an electric current from flowing freely or stops the flow. Electricity • Electricity is the energy produced by the movement of electrons. Electric Current • An electric current is the flow of electricity through a circuit. Electric Circuit • An electric circuit is the pathway that an electrical current flows. Electromagnetic Field • An electromagnetic field is a magnetic field created by an electrical current. Electromagnet in use Questions • What type of material can be used as a conductor? • What type of material can be used as an insulator? • What is a circuit? • How can we create an electromagnetic field?
