Conductors and Insulators
Divide students into groups of two and have each student bring 10 different types of
materials from home to test if each material is a conductor or insulator.
Set up several series circuits in the lab to test each material.
Each circuit should have a battery, a switch, and a lamp (LED 3 Volt or lamp 9 Volt).
Connect each component of the circuit by following either diagram below. Be sure to
observe the voltage rating on the lamp. Connect 2 gator leads at the open ends of the
circuits. Connect the other ends of the gator leads to the materials to be tested. If the light
comes on when the switch is closed the material is a conductor. If the light does not come
on when the switch is closed the material is an insulator.
List each conductor and insulator in the correct column on the sheet below.
