5th Grade: Animal Systems Study Guide
Objective: Identify the function of each body system
1. circulatory system – the organ system that moves blood through the body
a. blood – red fluid circulating in body: the red fluid that is pumped from the heart and
circulates around the bodies of humans and other vertebrates
b. blood vessel – an artery, vein, or capillary through which blood flows
c. heart – a hollow muscular organ that pumps blood around the body
2. digestive system – the organ system that breaks down food
a. stomach – breaks the food down into smaller parts
b. small intestine – absorbs nutrients from food
3. excretory system – the organ system that removes wastes from the body
a. liver – a glandular vascular organ in vertebrates that secretes bile, stores and filters blood,
and takes part in many metabolic functions such as the conversion of sugars into glycogen
b. kidney – waste-removing vertebrate organ; either of a pair of organs in the abdomen of
vertebrates that filter waste liquid
c. bladder – bodily sac for liquid or gas
d. skin – natural layer covering body; the external protective membrane or covering of an
animal's body, consisting of the dermis and epidermis and often covered in hair, fur, scales,
or feathers
4. muscular system – the organ system made up of muscles that help the body move
a. muscles – tissue that allows for body movement
5. nervous system – the set of organs that uses information from the five senses to control all body
systems
a. brain –the controlling center of the nervous system, connected to the spinal cord
b. nerve – a bundle of fibers that sends messages between the brain or spinal cord to all other
parts of the body
6. reproductive system – the set of organs that make it possible for organisms to start the life cycle
over again
7. respiratory system – the organ system that brings oxygen to body cells and removes the waste gas
carbon dioxide
a. lungs – takes in oxygen from the air and releases carbon dioxide
8. skeletal system – the organ system made up of bones that support the body
a. bones – section of skeleton: one of the hard parts forming the skeleton in vertebrate
animals
Remember: Snakes Make Delicious Cakes Near Running Rivers’ Edges
Objective: Explain how systems work together to perform activities
Skeletal System and Muscular Systems: The skeletal and muscular work together to give movement to the
human body. Muscles attach to the bones and contract or relax to make the bones move.
Circulatory and Respiratory Systems: The circulatory and respiratory systems work together to bring oxygen
into the body and to carry it to every cell.
Circulatory and Excretory System: The circulatory and excretory systems work together to remove wastes
from the body. Circulatory system removes wastes from the cells. The excretory system carries the waste out
of the body.
Digestive System and Excretory System: The digestive and excretory system work together to take in food
and remove it from the body after digestion takes place.
Nervous System and all other systems: The nervous system controls every other system in the body. It sends
signals to nerves controlling the running of each system.
Practice Questions:
1. The skeletal system and muscular system work together to…
a. Rid the body of wastes
b. Send signals to all body parts
c. Move the body
d. Store minerals and produce blood for the body
2. Scenario: Your team is participating in basketball practice. Your coach sends you to the free throw line
to practice shots. What systems in your body are working together to perform this activity?
a. Skeletal and muscular systems
b. Skeletal, muscular, and nervous system
c. Nervous and muscular system
d. Nervous and skeletal systems
3. The __________________________ system and the ___________________ system work together to
carry food energy to all cells in the body.
4. The __________________________ system and the ___________________ system work together to
carry oxygen to all cells in the body and to remove carbon dioxide.
5. Removes wastes from the body.
a. Digestive
b. Skeletal
c. Muscular
d. Excretory
