Year 8 Extended Homework Task- Pathway 2
World War One – Diary of a Soldier
You are to complete the task below using your knowledge of the day to day
lives of WW1 soldiers and the conditions they on the front line. To do this
you will need to use the internet for research to these questions.
1. How long did servicemen spend on the front lines under fire?
2. What food did they eat while in the trenches?
3. What is shellshock? What are the signs and symptoms of the condition
and what happened to those who had it?
To display your work you are to create a diary as if you are a soldier on the
front lines. You are writing this for your own benefit and can describe what
you are really going through.
Extension
You want to write a letter home to a close family member, but know that
this will be censored. Research censorship and write a letter home telling
them how you are doing, while censoring information that would be taken
out by your superior officers.
Year 8 Extended Homework Task- Pathway 3
World War One – Trench Art
‘Trench Art’ is a term used to describe objects made from the debris and by-products of
modern warfare. Trench Art is usually associated with the First World War, although similar
items have been produced in other conflicts too.
Most Trench Art was made by servicemen to pass the time when not in the front line.
While much of it was simple and amateurish, the production of some examples required
metalworking skills or workshop facilities. This industry continued after the war, with trench
art-type objects being created for sale as souvenirs to the visitors to battlefields and
cemeteries, and such items are still manufactured to this day.
TASK - Find two images of trench art. Paste (or draw) each image into the space provided.

World War One – Read all about it! War in Europe
On 28 June 1914, a Serbian shot an Austrian. Within six weeks, many of the
countries of Europe had become involved in a war that was to cause the deaths of
10 million soldiers, but was the assassination the only cause of war?
Four underlying causes of war
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand signalled the rapid slide into world war,
but this wasn't the only cause. There were underlying causes in the run-up to the First
World War.
In the 1930s, historians argued that there were four underlying long-term causes of
the First World War:




Nationalism - the belief that your country is better than others. This made
nations assertive and aggressive.
Imperialism - the desire to conquer colonies, especially in Africa. This brought
the powers into conflict - Germany wanted an empire. France and Britain already had
empires.
Militarism (Arms Race) - the attempt to build up a strong army and navy gave
nations the means and will to make war.
Alliances - in 1882, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy formed the Triple
Alliance. This alarmed, France, Britain and Russia. By 1907, they had all joined the Triple
Entente. Europe was divided into two armed camps, to help each other if there was war.
Task
Produce a newspaper front page from EITHER Britain or Germany the
day after war was declared explaining the lead up to the war and people’s
reactions.
You must include:
 A headline
 A picture
 Details on the M.A.I.N causes of the War and the
assassination of Franz Ferdinand
 An interview with either a British or German citizen.
You may use the Blank template on the next page to help you if you wish.
