Math Homework
Study Links pg. 5
Table Leaders: Pass out reference
books & get rulers from Ms. Smith
Individuals: Have orange notebook
on desk; put everything else away.
Geometry: Lesson 1
Target/Objective: I can identify and
describe characteristics of line
segments, lines, and rays.
Math Message
Open your Student Reference Book to page
88. Let’s read, “Geometry in Our World,”
together.
Shoulder Partner Activity:
– List three places, from the text, where geometry
can be found in our world.
– Look around the classroom and find three
geometric shapes or figures.
Geometry: Math Vocabulary
• Point: a location in space
– Usually made with a dot ( ) to show where the
point is.
• Line Segment: is made up of 2 endpoints and
the straight path between them

• Ray: a straight path that has a starting point
and goes on forever in ONE direction.

• Line: a straight path that goes on forever in
BOTH directions.

• In your notebook, draw two points and label
the points A and B.
• Use your straightedge to connect the points
(don’t allow your line to cross the two points).
• Naming this line segment

• In your notebook, draw two points and label the
points A and B.
• Use your straightedge to connect the points. This
time extend the line on both ends and use
arrowheads to show that it’s continuous.

How is a line different from
a line segment?
Rays

• In your notebook, draw two points and label the
points A and B.
• Use your straightedge to connect the points.
This time, extend the line on one end only (past
point B). Use an arrowhead to show that it’s
continuous.
• Naming this Ray

Shoulder Partner Activity
• How many line segments can you name using
the points marked on this line?

Z
• How many rays can you name using the points
marked on this line?
Independent Practice
Complete problems 1-4 on page 4 of
your math journal.

Wrap Up!
• Did we achieve our target/objective?
– I can identify and describe characteristics of line
segments, lines, and rays.
• Table Leaders: Put away Reference Books
• Individuals: Get ready to move classes
