THE WEST
Why it Matters
 Settlers been moving West since the founding
of America.
 Mixing of the different cultures, Native
Americans and Mexicans affected the
development of the West and entire nation.
What was “The West”
 Frontier is the land that forms the farthest
extent of a nation’s settled regions.
 By 1820, many Americans began to look beyond
the Mississippi River and further.
The Great Plains
 Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains
 Many believed the land was not suitable for
agriculture because of the grassy plains
 The Great Plains were just a simple route to
the Far West.
