Urinary System
Key terms
• adrenal gland Two glands that are responsible for releasing hormones in response to stress, such as catecholamines, and that
also produce aldosterone, a renal system hormone.
• antidiuretic hormone A hormone secreted by the posterior pituitary gland that increases water retention to decrease urine
volume and decrease plasma osmolarity.
• bilirubin A bile pigment that is a product of the breakdown of the heme portion of hemoglobin, that is processed into bile by the
liver.
• Bowman's capsule A cup-like sac at the beginning of the tubular component of a nephron in the mammalian kidney.
• Bowman's capsule A cup-like sac at the beginning of the tubular component of a nephron in the mammalian kidney.
• collecting duct A system of the kidneys that consists of a series of tubules and ducts that connect the nephrons to the ureter.
• diabetes A group of endocrine diseases whereby a person has high blood sugar due to an inability to produce, metabolize, or
respond to the hormone insulin.
• diuretic A substance that increases urine volume and increases plasma osmolarity, often by inhibiting ADH secretion to prevent
water reabsorption in the nephron.
• glomerulus A small, intertwined group of capillaries within the nephrons of the kidney that filter the blood to make urine.
• glomerulus A small, intertwined group of capillaries within nephrons of the kidney that filter the blood to make urine.
• glomerulus A small, intertwined group of capillaries within nephrons of the kidney that filter the blood to make urine.
• hydrostatic pressure The pushing force exerted by the pressure in a blood vessel. It is the primary force that drives glomerular
filtration.

Urinary System
• lumen The inside space of a tubular structure, such as an artery or intestine.
• micturition Also known as urination, this is the ejection of urine from the urinary bladder through the urethra to the outside of the
body.
• NA+/K+ ATPase An ATPase pump that consumes ATP to facilitate the active transport of ions in filtrate of the nephron.
• nephron The basic structural and functional unit of the kidney that filters the blood in order to regulate chemical concentrations
and thereby produce urine.
• nephron The basic structural and functional unit of the kidney that filters the blood in order to regulate chemical concentrations
and produce urine.
• osmoregulation The most important function of the renal system, in which blood volume, blood pressure, and blood osmolarity
(ion concentration) is maintained in homeostasis.
• osmotic pressure The pressure exerted by proteins that attracts water. Water tends to follow proteins based on an osmotic
pressure gradient.
• penis The male sexual organ for copulation and urination; also the tubular portion of the male genitalia (excluding the scrotum).
• peri-tubular capillaries The capillaries through which components of filtrate are reabsorbed from the lumen of the nephron.
• peristalsis The rhythmic, wave-like contraction of smooth muscle tissue that can propel substances through the many muscular
tubes of the body.
• peritubular capillaries Tiny blood vessels that travel alongside nephrons, allowing reabsorption and secretion between blood
and the inner lumen of the nephron.
• proximal tubule The first and primary sort of water and ion reabsorption in the kidney, where all glucose in the blood is
reabsorbed.

Urinary System
• reflex An automatic response to a simple stimulus that does not require mental processing.
• renal artery These arise off the side of the abdominal aorta, immediately below the superior mesenteric artery, and supply the
kidneys with blood.
• Renal clearance The rate at which a substance is removed from the plasma via renal system activity over a unit of time.
• renal cortex The outer region of the kidney, between the renal capsule and the renal medulla, that consists of a space that
contains blood vessels that connect to the nephrons.
• renal medulla The inner-most region of the kidney, arranged into pyramid-like structures, that consists of the bulk of nephron
structure.
• renal vein The veins that drain the kidney and connect the kidney to the inferior vena cava.
• transitional epithelial tissues Epithelial tissues that can change between columnar and squamous forms that are found in the
ureters and the cervix.
• trigone A triangle-shaped part of an organ, such as the bottom of the bladder.
• urea A water-soluble organic compound, CO(NH2)2, formed by the metabolism of proteins and excreted in the urine. The liver
converts ammonia to urea.
• ureter These are two long, narrow ducts that carry urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder.
• ureter These are two long, narrow ducts that carry urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder.
• urinalysis Also known as routine and microscopy (R&M), this is an array of tests performed on urine, and one of the most
common methods of medical diagnosis.

Urinary System
• urinalysis A urinalysis (UA), also known as Routine and Microscopy (R&M), is an array of tests performed on urine, and one of
the most common methods of medical diagnosis.
• urinary bladder An elastic, muscular sac situated in the pelvic cavity, into which urine from the kidneys is stored prior to
disposal by urination. Urine enters the bladder via the ureters and exits via the urethra.
• urinary cast Tiny structures formed from bound abnormal cells and molecules within the nephrons that are excreted in urine.
• urine A liquid excrement consisting of water, salts, and urea that is made in the kidneys then released through the urethra.
• urine A liquid excrement that consists of water, salts, and urea, and is made in the kidneys then released through the urethra.
• urine A liquid excrement consisting of water, salts, and urea that is made in the kidneys then released through the urethra.
• urine A liquid excrement consisting of water, salts, and urea, which is made in the kidneys then released through the urethra.
• urine A liquid excrement consisting of water, salts, and urea, which is made in the kidneys then released through the urethra.
• vagina A fibromuscular tubular tract that is the female sex organ and has two main functions: sexual intercourse and childbirth.

Summary of the process of urine formation
As the fluid flows along the proximal convoluted tubule useful substances like glucose, water, salts, potassium ions, calcium ions, and amino acids are
reabsorbed into the blood capillaries that form a network around the tubules. Many of these substances are transported by active transport and energy is
required.
