CRITICAL NARRATIVE
Over the course of the 18th century, reverence increased toward the natural world
and it was seen as a source of inspiration for the poet.
Additionally, the role of the poet moved from one of wanting to represent and
imitate the world around him to becoming a proto-romantic creator more concerned
with the subjective and inner world of the soul.
THESIS
Based on our data, Romantic trends regarding
the poet’s inner and outer world follow the
typical critical narrative concerning the
Enlightenment period, although these trends are
found in a shift of usage patterns rather than
an increase of usage.
HISTORICAL MOMENTS
1701 – First daily newspapers created in England
1701 – 1714 – War of Spanish succession
1707 – Scotland and England unify to become Kingdom of Great Britain
1710 – First copyright legislation
1714 – George I becomes King of England
1721 – Robert Walpole becomes Britain’s first prime minister
1730 – First Great Awakening begins
In general, England was involved in lots of war during this timeframe including the
Tuscarora War, the War of Spanish Succession, The Anglo-Spanish War, among
others.
