Answers the question-- How many total?
Look at this example:
Mrs. Evans went to the grocery store and got
four bags of groceries. If there are 6 items in each
bag, how many total items does she have?
4 X 6 = 24
Division
Answers the question- How many in each?
Take another look at our example:
Here is how the problem would change:
Mrs. Evans went to the grocery store and bought
24 items. She has four bags. How many items would
evenly be in each bag?
24 ÷ 4 = 6
