Drugs
Drugs have been part of our culture since the middle
of the last century. Popularized in the 1960s by
music and mass media, they invade all aspects of
society.
An estimated 208 million people internationally
consume illegal drugs.
Neurotransmitters (natural hormones)
Serotonin

➢ Regulates mood, temper,
anxiety
➢ Prevents depression
➢ Influences overall wellbeing.
Dopamine
➢ Controls release of
adrenaline
➢ Helps the body cycle through
sleep/awake.

and reward in the brain.
Gateway Drugs-A substance that may lead
the user to try more addictive drugs.

Factors that influence decisions to use
drugs
Peer pressure, family members, role models,
media, music, perceptions...
Understanding & Getting HELP!
Outpatient Treatment- Usually no medicine; individual/group
counseling sessions.
Short-Term Treatment- Residential (30-45 days), medication,
individual and group counseling.
Maintenance Therapy- Mostly alcohol & heroin; reverse the
tolerance developed; medicine used, medical setting.
Therapeutic Communities- Long term addicts. Very structured,
6-12 months residency. Very strict.
Effects of Drugs on the body
Stimulants- Increase heart rate, blood pressure, & breathing rate.
Increased risk of heart attack.
Depressants- Slow down heart rate, blood pressure & breathing
rate. Increased risk for coma & cardiac arrest.
Narcotics (Opiates)- Highly addictive! Legal by prescription only.
Depressant effects, easily mixed & overdosed.
Hallucinogens- Flashbacks, bad “trips” major self-harm,
permanent psychosis. Stimulant effects.

Inhalants- Brain damage, immediate overdose/easy death.
Depressant effects.
Designer Drugs- Synthetic substances that are man-made and
not found naturally.
Synthetic is man-made (fake)

overdoses caused by heroin or other opioids, which include
prescription drugs such as hydrocodone and oxycodone.

more money and create a bigger addiction to keep addicts
