What is a Physical Property?
• A property that can be observed or measured
without changing the chemical makeup of the
substance
What is a Chemical Property?
• Properties that can be observed or measured
BUT the chemical makeup of the substance is
changed, usually into a totally new substance
- They CANNOT be determined just by viewing or
touching the substance
- The chemical makeup of the substance must be
changed which often leads to new substances
being formed

with properties that are different from the
original substances
How do we know when chemical
changes have occurred?
4 indicators that tell us when:
1. Gas or bubbles are produced
2. Temperature changes
3. Color changes
* Be careful with temperature and color
changes because they do not always indicate
a chemical change!!!
4. Precipitate is produced
What is a Precipitate?
• It is the solid that is formed during a chemical
reaction
Oxidize
• A chemical reaction with Oxygen
• Sometimes referred to as Oxidation or Rust
Tarnish
• The dullness or discoloration that is caused by
oxidation
