Unit 6: Evolution
This unit will allow each student to:
a. gain a better understanding of how life may have occurred
b. gain a better understanding of Darwin’s theory of evolution and its principles
c. gain a better understanding of the evidence supporting Darwin’s theory of evolution
d. gain a better understanding of the mechanism and patterns of evolution
e. continue making proper scientific measurements and calculations
f. define and properly use all vocabulary
g. properly apply all terms and concepts in describing/explaining real world examples
h. make and interpret scientific graphs and diagrams
i. teach someone else the concepts discussed
j. practice proper laboratory safety
This will be accomplished by each student that is able to:
1. differentiate between spontaneous generation and biogenesis
2. sequence the events that might have lead to the cellular life
3. describe the endosymbiont theory
4. discuss the evidence that convinced Darwin that species could change over time
5. list the four principles of natural selection
6. show how natural selection could change a population
7. describe how fossils provide evidence of evolution
8. discuss morphological evidence of evolution
9. explain how biochemistry provides evidence of evolution
10. discuss the Hardy-Weinberg Principle and state the five conditions required for a population
not to evolve
11. discuss genetic drift and identify 2 extreme examples of genetic drift
12. discuss patterns observed in evolution
13. describe factors that influence speciation
14. compare gradualism with punctuated equilibrium
