Teacher Questions about
the equation….
Hours
Lesson 9: Representing
Proportional Relationships with
Equations
Objective:
I can use constant of proportionality to write equations in real world
situations.
Jackson’s Birdhouses
• How many birdhouses can Jackson build n 40 hours?
• How long will it take Jackson to build 35 birdhouses? Use the equation from
part a to solve the problem.
• How long will it take to build 71 birdhouses? Use the equation from part a to
solve the problem.
Dependent vs. Independent
Variable
• What does Independent and Dependent mean?
• In Jackson’s problem, which quantity was dependent
(the Birdhouse or the Hours) and which was independent
(the Birdhouse or the Hours)?
The number of Hours depends on the number of Birdhouses you make,
therefore the Hours (y) is the dependent variable. Making the
Birdhouses the independent variable.

y = 0.21x
Teacher Questions about
the equation….
y = 0.22x
Reflection Time!!!
• What type of relationship can be modeled using an equation in the
form 𝑦 = 𝑘𝑥, and what do you need to know to write an
equation in this form?
• How do you determine which value is 𝑥 (independent) and which
value is 𝑦 (dependent)?
