It is home to the Niagara escarpment, which extends from the world famous Niagara Falls to Manitoulin Island. 4. Describe, in detail, the landscape of the Great Lakes Lowlands. What created this landscape? Glaciers created a rolling landscape and deposited (left behind) lots of soil, sand, gravel, and big boulders from the Canadian Shield. The Great Lakes are located in big basins that were carved out by glaciers! 7. Why is the landscape ideal for both agriculture and urban areas (cities)? This region has excellent soils and a warm climate. It is flat, so ideal for transportation, farming, and growing cities. It is sometimes referred to as the urban heartland of Ontario because almost 50% of Canada’s population lives in this region!
