Civil War Test
This is an essay test. What follows are 5 questions, your task is to choose 2 of these questions
and answer them to the best of your abilities. Each of these answers is worth 25 points for a total of 50.
These answers are expected to be well thought out and your best quality work. You have the hour, stay
quiet if you finish early and respect your classmates that are trying to finish.
1. Choose 2 of the quotes from the unit and apply them to decisions that any of the
commanders made during the Civil War. It can be either how the commander used or failed
to follow the advice of either author.
2. Sherman’s March to the Sea is one of the first uses of total war. How was this a change from
previous warfare, and how has it been used since then in any conflict?
3. Explain why Gettysburg is recognized as the turning point of the war. How was it a failure for
the Confederacy and a triumph for the Union?
4. The Union was much stronger than the Confederacy, how then was the Confederacy able to
hold on for so long? Was it a Union failure of strategy or something else?
5. How does the Civil War affect our view of the United States today?
Civil War Collage Project
During this project you are to work in a group on a collage completely of magazine clippings to
explain an piece of the Civil War. There is a list on the board of possible topics. Choose a partner or
group of three depending on class. I will let you know which. I will also let you know when you will be
able to choose one of these. Have few different choices of what to do your top one might be gone by
the time you get to class. These collages will be put on display in the hallway when finished to create a
timeline of the Civil War.
In addition to the collage you must also write up an explanation of why the piece deserves to be
on the list as opposed to things that are not on the list to do.
