DORIS DUKE JAZZ ENSEMBLES PROJECT NEW WORKS: CREATION AND PRESENTATION 2007 GUIDELINES Completed applications due at CMA offices on February 28, 2007 at 5 p.m. Eastern Time This is an in-office deadline, NOT a postmark deadline. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Grant Period: July 2007 – June 2009 This program is made possible through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. OVERVIEW The New Works: Creation and Presentation Program provides funds to composer-led jazz ensembles for the creation and presentation of original music in the jazz idiom. Currently entering its eighth grant cycle, the program supports the creation and performance of new compositions by established ensembles with a documented performance history. The program also recognizes ensemble members and their individual and collective contributions to the compositional process. ELIGIBILITY Professional jazz ensembles that are led by a composer/performer, or are cooperatively run, are eligible. Only one member of an ensemble may be the designated composer on an application. To be eligible, the ensemble must: be an Organization-level member of Chamber Music America (membership must be paid by the time of application and grant recipients must maintain their CMA membership for the duration of the grant period); perform original music that includes improvisation as an integral aspect of its composition and performance; have a demonstrated and documented history of performing together with an ongoing core of musicians; have given a minimum of 10 public performances within the past two years; range in size from two to ten members; be based in the U.S.; have no overdue final reports for any CMA grant program; have no overdue financial obligations to CMA. Additionally: The composer must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; Applicants may not apply to both the CMA Commissioning Program and the New Works: Creation and Presentation Program in the same year; Composers and/or ensembles with current CMA New Works: Creation and Presentation or Commissioning Program grants must wait one full year after the completion of their current grant period prior to re-applying to the program. For example, grantees that have completed a New Works grant in 2006 must wait until 2008 before applying again. CHAMBER MUSIC AMERICA – NEW WORKS: CREATION AND PRESENTATION PROGRAM The program will not fund: applications submitted by newly formed ensembles; applications submitted by entities other than the composer (e.g., presenters, managers, recording companies, etc.); previously written work; ensembles that do not include improvisation as an integral aspect of their composition and performance; commissions by a composer who is not a member of the ensemble. PROJECT REQUIREMENTS The resulting work supported by this grant should meet a high artistic standard. The work must include ensemble members’ improvisation and other input integral to the work’s full realization. In addition, the composition must be: of substantial length (such as a work comprising multiple sections or movements); completely written for grantee’s ensemble by June 30, 2008; publicly performed by the grantee’s ensemble at least twice in the U.S. by December 31, 2008 (using the personnel, instrumentation, and size of ensemble listed on the grant application); recorded and submitted in CD format as part of the final report. (The recording submitted will be used for CMA archival purposes only; grantee retains all rights to the work.) CD WORK SAMPLE Applicants must provide: a representative recording that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to compose for the ensemble, the ensemble’s cohesiveness and sound/concept, and improvisational quality; a description of the CD work sample; a list of instrumentation and personnel performing on the recording. REVIEW CRITERIA AND PROCESS Applications are reviewed by an independent panel of jazz professionals. The panel will not include composer/musicians who work outside of the jazz idiom, CMA Board members, or staff. Review panelists evaluate the applications using the following criteria: composition; ensemble cohesiveness; group and individual improvisation; merit of the proposed new work. Panel recommendations are presented to the CMA Board of Directors for funding approval. GRANT RANGE Grants of up to $15,000 are available for ensembles ranging from 2–10 members. Composer Fee: $6,000 (includes commission and composer’s performance fee). Ensemble Fee: $1,000 per ensemble member (excluding the composer). PAYMENT SCHEDULE 50% of the Composer Fee is awarded after receipt of signed agreement; Ensemble Fee is paid after receipt of written confirmation for both of the required engagements; remaining 50% of the Composer’s Fee is paid after receipt of final report.
