One of the most important cultural international events in the world of classical music, the George
Enescu International Festival (Bucharest, Romania) offers a unique cultural mix which values George
Enescu and other famous composers. A true cultural brand of Romania, the Enescu Festival brings
to Bucharest approximately 20.000 tourists per edition and is being covered worldwide by CNN,
Euronews, BBC, The Guardian or The Gramophone. The Enescu Festival follows the values in which
composer George Enescu believed: creativity, generosity and involvement.
George Enescu (1881-1955), the first Romanian composer who crossed the threshold into the
universal cultural heritage, loved equally the cockcrow, the folkloric tones and the thrilling
Wagnerian chords. Furthermore, he merged them inimitably and miraculously in his creation, making
possible this way not only his ascend from national to universal, but also his worldwide recognition
amongst the greatest composers in the world. What makes George Enescu a pioneer is precisely the
fact that he is the first Romanian composer who transcended the national cultural heritage by
reinterpreting Romanian traditional cultural elements, entwined with the finest influences of the
international music, in a distinctive and matchless way. “What is important in art is to vibrate and
make others vibrate”, believed George Enescu.
Today, an average of 20 works by George Enescu is interpreted in the Enescu Festival by some of the
greatest orchestras and conductors of the world. It is in the Enescu Festival’s identity to promote
new interpretations of the works composed by George Enescu and to take Enescu’s music abroad
and include the compositions in the international repertoires (London Philharmonic Orchestra with
Symphony No.3 by George Enescu performed at the Royal Festival Hall is such an example). At the
same time, George Enescu Competition, organized separately, yet in the frame of the Festival, opens
a door to an international career for young artists all over the world.
Following a strategic direction to make culture and classical music accessible to the public at large,
the Enescu Festival is up to date with new technologies: international live transmissions, a modern
and interactive website, www.festivalenescu.ro, as well as Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest
accounts. Journalists have at their disposal a Media Galery with high resolution and real time images
from each edition of the Festival.
Starting with the 2013 edition, the Enescu Festival has also reached the public spehere, through an
unique concept that brings to the public space outdoor works of art inspired by George Enescu’s
values and takes on generating change in society trough the act of creation: Creative Bucharest.
