Propaganda and War bonds
Warm-up
•How do you think
average Americans
helped with the fight
during WWII?
Vocabulary
• Bonds-certificates sold by the government to
raise money. You can retrieve the money after
a set amount of time.
• Propaganda-information that is spread, often
by the government, for the purpose of
promoting some cause
• Rationing- giving a fixed portion of food or
other essentials to each person to conserve
goods.
Notes: Rationing
• War bonds and rationing were used as ways to
support the troops overseas.
• The government asked the American people
to ration food and other important resources
so that they would have enough to send to
the troops.
• Recycling of metals also became important
during this time.
Notes: War Bonds
• The government raised taxes but it
was not enough to support the war
effort so they borrowed from the
public by selling war bonds.
• People bought war bonds as a
patriotic gesture to give the
government more money
• They would get a little bit of interest
when it was paid back.
Propaganda
• Propaganda was used to gain support
for the war effort.
• There are many different forms of
Propaganda but all propaganda in the
U.S. during this time was created by the
government to encourage people to
support the war in anyway possible.
Propaganda Exercise
• There are 8 pieces of propaganda from the 1940s
around the room.
• You will go to each and fill out your graphic
organizer.
• Each time you fill out a propaganda number you
will come back to me to get it checked. You will
then either be told to move on or retry it.
• You get 10 pts for every correct one you
complete. These points will then be added to
your class work grade.
