What are sexually transmitted infections/diseases? • Sexually transmitted diseases or STDs as they are commonly called, spread from one infected partner to another sex partner during sexual activity. What type of germs cause STIs? • STIs are caused by bacteria, viruses, fungus and parasites How are these germs spread from person to person? • The germs live either directly on the skin or in body fluids such as semen, vaginal secretions and blood. These diseases are spread by direct contact with a sore or with contact with body fluids that contain the STI germs. Common Bacterial STI’s •Chlamydia •Gonorrhea •Syphilis Chlamydia • A bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. *The most common sexually transmitted three million new people being infected each year. *Chlamydia is a “silent” infection, as 75 percent of women and 50 percent of men who have it experience no symptoms. Chlamydia Symptoms • Usually no symptoms • Burning during urination • Abnormal vaginal discharge • Lower abdominal pain (women) • Abnormal discharge from penis • Swelling of Testes (males) Chlamydia Treatment • Chlamydia is easily treatable with antibiotics. They look like sea crabs, which is why they are often referred to as “ crabs”. • The lice cling to pubic hair and feed on blood. •The female of the species lays about 50 eggs, called nits, and attaches them to the base of a hair strand.
