SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED
DISEASES
CHLAMYDIA
• Caused by bacteria
chlamydia trachomatis
• Genital discharge
• Burning on urination
• Often asymtomatic
• Often misdiagnosed as
bladder infection
CHLAMYDIA
• If untreated …
• In women can cause PID (pelvic
inflammatory disease) and block fallopian
tubes, leads to infertility and tubal
pregnancies
• In men can block vas deferens so sperm
can’t get through, leads to infertility
GONORRHEA
• Caused by bacteria
Neisseria gonorrhea
• Genital discharge
• Burning on urination
• Often asymtomatic
• Often misdiagnosed as
bladder infection
GONORRHEA
• If untreated in either sex can lead to arthritis
and reduced life expectancy
SYPHILIS
• Caused by bacteria
Treponema pallidum
• More dangerous than
chlamydia or
gonorrhea
• Primary: chancres
(sores) in genital area
• Some sores are internal
and undetected
SYPHILIS
• Secondary: rash
spreads
• If left untreated can
cause weakening of
arteries, blindness,
psychological
problems, bone or
muscle damage
Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and
Syphilis can all be cured with
antibiotics IF DIAGNOSED
EARLY!!!
However, due to inappropriate use of
antibiotics, some strains have become
antibiotic resistant
HERPES
• Caused by the herpes
simplex type II virus
• No cure
• No vaccine yet
• Ulcers in genitals
• Some ulcers may be
internal and undetected
• Flu like symptoms
• Painful urination
• discharge
HERPES
• Even when you have no symptoms, your body can
be “shedding” the virus
• Can lie dormant
• Triggered by stress, sex, sunlight, menstration
GENITAL WARTS
• Caused by human
papilloma virus
• Often no symptoms
for years after
infection
• Warts in genital area
• Warts can be cut off,
but tend to regrow
GENITAL WARTS
• HPV has been linked
to an increased risk of
cancer of the cervix,
vulva, and penis
• New vaccine now
available for HPV
AIDS
• Caused by Human
Immunodeficiency
Virus (HIV)
• Destroys T4 white
blood cells (helper T
cells), so immune
system collapses
• Usually die of other
diseases
AIDS
• Can be asymptomatic
• AZT and protease
inhibitors slow it
down in some people
• No vaccine yet
