Photosynthesis and Respiration
• Photosynthesis
– Plants take in CO2, sunlight, and water to make food
– Carbon is used for ENERGY
– Animals get carbon from eating plants or from eating
animals that eat plants.
• Respiration
– Animals and plants putting CO2 back into the
atmosphere.
– Convert food to energy using oxygen and giving off
CO2
Decomposition
• When plants or animals die
– Decomposers
• bacteria, fungi, some insects, and snails, which means
they are not always microscopic.
• Use some of carbon for own bodies, rest is returned to
the atmosphere.
Combustion and Sources
• When fossil fuels are extracted from the earth
and burned.
• CO2 released into the atmosphere
• Other carbon sources
– Animals
– Forest fires
– Volcanic eruptions
Storage and Sinks
• Sink
– A place on earth where carbon is stored/absorbed
– Where?
•

Water (surface and deep ocean)
Plants and trees
Atmosphere
Fossil Fuels
Rocks (carbonates like limestone)
Soil
Shells (contain CaCO3 calcium carbonate)
Humans are increasing earth’s natural
carbon cycle by……….
• Cutting down trees (deforestation)
– Deforestation releases carbon dioxide back into
the atmosphere as well as taking away the ability
of the trees to absorb CO2
• Burning fossil fuels
– Burning releases carbon atoms that have been
locked away inside the earth for millions of years.
– Extra CO2 acts like a blanket trapping extra heat
that otherwise would escape into space.
– Therefore increasing earths temperature.
