Used?
MRI technology is used by using magnetic fields
to cause the magnetic fields of Hydrogen atoms
to line up in the same directions the outer
magnetic field.
A radio transmitter releases different radio
waves.
A scanner detects the changes in the spectrum
of radio waves, resulting in an image.

• Who made it?
• Invented by Raymond Vahan Damadian
– Got idea while using NMR to scan salt loving
bacteria called “Halophiles”
– Devised own method of scanning human
body
– 1st MRI: 1977; scanning thorax
What is it used for?
• Scanning body to produce body structure images
to detect injuries, diseases, illness, etc.
Advantages:
• There is virtually no risk to patients who receive
an MRI scan because it does not involve any
radiation
• Today's scanning techniques can produce
extremely clear three-dimensional images
• Non invasive way to view organs, tissues,
bones and other structures inside the body
• Scans soft tissues:
– Muscles, brain, and internal organs
Disadvantages
of Diagnostic
Technologies:
• Radiation concerns
1. X-rays damage DNA itself.
2. Only exposed to low levels of radiation,
known as a risk for cancer.
3. Cannot perform CAT scans on pregnant
women; unsafe for the baby
4. No risk in MRI

How has it
helped
today's
society
• Diagnostic technology has positively impacted today’s
society. Patients who receive X-ray or CAT scans face
an increased risk of cancer due to the low levels of
exposure to radiation. However, through the use of a
diagnostic technology called magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI), patients no longer face those risks since
MRI scans do not use ionizing radiation.
