Organism Interactions Alondra Del Rio 5/2/14 (there are animations on these slides so if you play the words/pictures will be legible) What is symbiosis? Symbiosis- a relationship between two different species that live on, in or near each other What are the kinds of symbiosis? • Commensalism • Mutualism • Parasitism What is commensalism? Commensalism- a symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is not affected Examples of commensalism Birds Frogsand andcows Trees Birds feed on insects. When cows eat or graze they stir The trees protect the frogs from the rain up bugs making them easier to find for birds. The bird but receive benefit orthe harm benefits becauseno it gets food and cow is not affected. (this would not be a kind of bird who eats the bugs off cows) What is mutualism? • Mutualism- a symbiotic relationship in which both organisms are benefited Examples of mutualism Bees and Flowers Clownfish and anemones Bees pollinate allowing them may to get poisoned Clownfish flowers live in anemones and predators by the anemone’s nematocysts keeping the clownfish safe and giving reproduce. The bees then in return get food. them a place to live. In Return the clownfish cleans the anemone. Nematocysts- a specialized cell containing a barbed or venomous coiled thread that can be projected in self-defense or to capture prey. We are SAFE!!!!!!!! What is parasitism? Parasitism- a symbiotic relationship in which the parasite benefits and the host is harmed Examples of parasitism Humans Mosquitoes Dog andand Ticks Mosquitoes use (in this example, there are many the dog loses nutrients, harming it, and more things other than) humans as a food source. the tick is getting nutrients that it needs They land on the skin and suck out some of your benefiting it. blood, making a meal for them and an irritating My nutrients!! itch for us and maybe a disease. Meal Time!! What is Competition? Competition- when organisms compete for what they need, such as food, shelter/territory, mate, etc. Other non-symbiotic relationships • Competition • Cooperation • Predation Examples of Competition Deer Wolves Deer and oftenwolf fight against each other for things Wolves packs often fight against each other mate.their territory. If a wolf claimed its so such they as cana claim territory and other wolves try to claim it they fight. MY TERRITORY!!!! What is Cooperation Cooperation- When two organisms work together to get something they need. Examples of Cooperation A wolf Pack Hammer head shark and barber fish A In hammer head sharkthe in the ocean mayhave look forto work a wolf pack members company. This company is found in barber fish. together help survive. They have These fish giveto company to the shark and rub up certain jobs Hey against its rough skin dude! and that helps the fish get to make it easier. parasites and other unneeded thingsWE off HAVE of them TO WORK TOGETHER GUYS!! What is Predation Predation- when one animal is the predator and (usually) the smaller weaker animal is the prey Examples of Predation Hawk Snakeand andRabbit mouse A hawk soaring in the sky may see a A snake would go after a mouse and eat it. By rabbit and go after it and eat it. doing this the snake is the predator and the Making the hawk a predator and the mouse is the prey. rabbit the prey. YUM!
