Definition for
Persuasive
Writing
Persuasive writing is defined as
presenting reasons and examples to
influence action or thought.
This means that you are presenting
proof to persuade an audience to
agree with your ideas in an
argument.
Ex. A presidential debate
Ex. Convincing a parent that you
need a new phone

Elements
There are three elements of
persuasive language that are used to
convince your audience that your
side of the argument is correct:
Ethos, Pathos, and Logos
It is an appeal to authority or credibility
It is used to persuade your audience that
your side of the argument is credible and
trustworthy using facts
Ethos
Ex. "I am a doctor and you should take
this cold medicine because it will make
you healthy again."
Fact: You should listen to me because I
am an experienced doctor
It is an appeal to emotion
It is used to persuade your audience
using his/her feelings and emotions
Pathos
Ex. "You should go see a doctor
because you are sick and you don't
want to have a runny nose during
your presentation next week."
Emotion: Avoiding embarrassment
It is an appeal to logic and reason
It is used to persuade your audience that
your side of the argument can be proven
to be true
Logos
Ex. "Studies have proven that this cold
medicine helps people get rid of their
colds, therefore if you are sick with a cold
and take this medicine, you will get
better."
Proven truth: If you take this medicine
when you have a cold, you will get better
