Adams as president “Corrupt bargain”Jackson vows to win in 1828 Jackson’s supporters become known as Democrats Jackson seen as a friend to the common man Universal white male suffrage Jackson began the practice of replacing government officials with people who had supported him during the campaign. American Indians in these areas still owned large amounts of land. 1830: Indian Removal Act: relocates Indians to Oklahoma Army forces thousands of Indians off their land. Indians marched thousands of miles, many die along the way. What if the government took your land? Some Indians turn to violence. Cherokee go to Supreme Court Worcester v. Georgia: 1832, ruled that the gov. shouldn’t move Indians. States’ rights South imported a large amount of goods from Europe. Tariffs drove the price of those imports higher. Tariff of Abomination South Carolina Exposition and Protest: Vice President John Calhoun suggests that states nullify the tariff. SC threatens to secede, or leave, from the US. President Jackson tells SC that he will invade with the Army if they nullify the tariff.
