13.1 TRAILS WESTWARD
MANIFEST DESTINY
• The belief that the United States was destined to stretch from
the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
MOUNTAIN MEN AND THE RENDEZVOUS
• Mountain men survived by being tough and resourceful
• Individual trappers came to a prearranged site for a rendezvous
with traders from the east
• Trappers bought supplies from those traders and paid them in furs
LURE OF THE WEST
• Land Speculators: bought huge parcels of land in the hopes
that they would increase in value
• New Markets: manufacturers hoped that they could sell goods
to the settlers
OREGON FEVER
• Oregon Trail- ran from Independence Missouri to the Oregon
Territory
• Amazing stories spread about Oregon
• The sun always shone there
• Wheat grew as tall as men
• 2,000 mile journey
SANTA FE TRAIL
• Southern route across the
continent
• Led from Missouri to Santa Fe,
NM
THE MORMON TRAIL
• Most pioneers went west in search of wealth
• One group migrated for religious reasons
• Joseph Smith had founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day
Saints in upstate New York in 1830
• In 1844 an anti-Mormon mob in Illinois killed Smith
• In 1847 about 1,600 Mormons followed part of the Oregon Trail to
Utah. Led by Brigham Young.
• Built dams and canals, settled the mountain desert areas of Utah,
Idaho, Nevada
