Native Americans lost land because • They were ravaged by disease • Did not have modern weapons • They were eventually outnumbered on the East Coast This Date in History 1777: George Washington is defeated at Brandywine, PA September 26, 1777: The Result: The British Take Philadelphia • The loss of Philadelphia hurt the patriot cause, and Washington's force had dropped from a high of nearly 15,000 prior to the battle to only 6,000. Maryland’s Acts of Toleration Lord Baltimore was granted a charter in the New World and founded a colony for Catholics. England was a protestant nation and Catholics were not welcomed. In 1649, the Maryland legislature passed the Acts of Toleration which allowed both Protestant and Catholics to freely practice their religion. Poorer citizens disliked this and wanted to expand into native land as it was cheaper. Mercantilism: Colonies existed to benefit the “Mother Country” by • providing raw materials for industry • providing a captive market for Mother’s finished goods • contribute to the wealth of the Mother Country • “Do not compete with Mother in terms of buying or selling to other countries” Colonial Economics •Navigation Acts: Passed under the mercantilist system, the Navigation Acts (16511673) regulated trade in order to benefit the British economy. The acts restricted trade between England and its colonies to English or colonial ships, required certain colonial goods to pass through England before export, provided subsidies for the production of certain raw goods in the colonies, and banned colonial competition in large-scale manufacturing.
