Semi Truck Driving Training Program Class A CDL Training Overview The six-week semi truck driving training program is a self-paced, accelerated program designed for working adults to train for a career that offers freedom, stability, and competitive pay. You progress through the program as you master the content. You will develop skills in backing, turning, and safe driving on both rural and suburban roads using a variety of training techniques including web-based and classroom instruction, hands-on driving simulators, and full-size semis. Starting Wages and Career Opportunities Truck drivers are in demand and the need for drivers is expected to increase over the next several years. Iowa Workforce Development projects more than 1,400 openings each year for truck drivers in Iowa through the year 2022. With training, a full-time truck driver can expect to earn $27,000 - $40,000* the first year. *Iowa Workforce Development **Hawkeye Community College cannot guarantee employment or promotion. Admission Requirements Prior to starting, you must pass and pay for a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and pre-employment drug screening. You must also pass the General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination test at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and obtain your Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) permit. If needed, the truck driving program staff will assist you in obtaining a Class A CDL permit during the first week of class. Cost to workforce training. The cost of the program is $3,000 and includes books. It does not include the cost of the DOT physical ($80-$150), DMV tests, pre-employment drug screening ($50-$100), or the Class A CDL permit ($12). Financial Assistance Financial assistance may be available to individuals who qualify through a number of resources including: Iowa Workforce Development, AARP, Vocational Rehab, and veteran/military benefits. This program is not eligible for Federal Student Aid. Training is flexible, continuous, and convenient to meet the needs of working adults.
