First Battle of Bull
Run/Manassas
• Union General: Irvin McDowell
• Confederate General: Stonewall Jackson
• Goal: The Union army wanted to push towards
the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia
• Outcome: Union retreated, the South proved
that the Union would not be able to quickly
defeat them.
Seven Days’ Battle
• Union General: George McClellan
• Confederate General: Robert E. Lee
• Goal: Union assembled 100,000 troops to
attack Richmond
• Outcome: General Lee attacked McClellan
troops and forced the North to retreat away
from Richmond
Battle of Antietam

Goal: Union continues to try to take Richmond
Outcome: 3 days of viscous fighting, Union
was forced to retreat, Lee decides to start
moving his army North
Union Blockade
• Overview: Union had way more ships than the
South
– In retaliation, South began using Ironclads or ships
armored with iron.
• Goal: Union planned to blockade Southern ports
to kill the Southern economy and supply lines.
• Outcome: South sank several Union ships, but the
Union built their own ironclad called the Monitor
– The Union was able to defeat the South’s navy and
maintain the naval blockade.

Confederate: Stonewall Jackson, Lee
Goal: South wanted to invade the North
Outcome: North and South at Antietam Creek in
Maryland, North lost 12,000 soldiers while the
South lost 13,000 soldiers.
– The North defeated the South and stopped their
invasion of the North
– Battle of Antietam is the single bloodiest day in the
Civil War
Battle of Shiloh
• Union: Ulysses S. Grant (General in charge of
the Western campaign)
• Confederate: A.S. Johnston
• Goal Gain control of the Mississippi River
• Outcome: Both armies lost around 10,000
men, Grant won the battle and gained more
control of the Mississippi River Valley for the
North.

Fall of New Orleans
• Union: Admiral David Farragut
• Goal: Take control of New Orleans (mouth of
the Mississippi River)
• Outcome: Farragut armored and camouflaged
his ships, was then able to defeat
Confederates and take control of New
Orleans, and Baton Rouge
Siege of Vicksburg
• Union: Grant, Farragut
• Confederate: Pemberton
• Goal: take control of Vicksburg (on the
Mississippi River)
• Outcome: Grant surrounded the city and cut
of supply lines (siege).
– Soldiers and people starved
– South surrendered
Struggles for the Far West
• Union, Confederate, and Cherokee involved
• Goal: Keep Confederates from controlling the
West
• Outcome: North won battles to keep control
of Missouri, Colorado, and Arizona
– Cherokee helped the Confederates in hopes of
gaining more freedoms.
