Christmas Carol Continues to Rally
Madison Community Together
It has been 40 years since Children’s Theater of Madison (CTM) and their first
production of A Christmas Carol took to the stage in 1976. It has been performed
almost consistently every season, and even anchored the company when it was faced
with some of its most challenging years, making it one of Madison’s most enduring
holiday traditions.
This year will prove no different. Colleen Madden’s commissioned adaption of the
Charles Dickens’ classic will once again come to life in the Capitol Theater this
December. But while it’s CTM’s fourth time with this script, Artistic Director Roseann
Sheridan confirms it is not the same production.
“Each year, we continually tweak, and the fleshing out continues.” Sheridan shared
regarding the prep work involved. “We constantly look at it – how to make the story
stronger, how to keep young people in the audience engaged, and how to keep the
story alive and vibrant.”
madison
FOOTNOTES
Sheridan stated the biggest change this season involved the casting. With a cast of
42 actors between the ages of nine and 60, the energy is different and unique when
compared to the past four versions of this production. Colleen Madden herself joins
the cast as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and actor David Daniel will portray miser
Ebenezer Scrooge for the first time ever in his career. “He [as an artist] is very invested
in young people experiencing the theater.” Evident, considering Daniel’s wife and three
sons are also performing in this year’s production.
With such a large cast, keeping to the vision is crucial, but fortunately Jim Ridge will
be directing once again. “[He] creates an environment where everyone is an important
piece to the show – equally essential. You might carry more weight with the text, but
it takes everybody to tell this story.”
That sense of community amongst the cast members and crew is especially
important for this show. “Scrooge becomes engaged with his community and his
humanity. My personal favorite part of the story is when Scrooge wakes up [Christmas
morning]…grinning from ear to ear.” Sheridan shared excitedly. “This time of year is all
about connecting with community, causes we care about and values we hold dear.”
The Madison community continues to rally around this seasonal gift from CTM, and it
is evident that it will continue to do so in the years to come.
A Christmas Carol will enchant at the Capitol Theater December 10-23.

Overture
Sneak Peek
A Brief History on The
Phantom of the Opera
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famous rock
opera first dazzled audiences with
its decadent chandelier and tragic
love story in 1986, when it opened
in London’s West End. Now, 30 years
later, a new and darker take on the
musical tale is touring the United
States.
Under Laurence Connor’s direction, this
version boasts updated technology
for the special effects. Paul Brown’s
scenic design feeds off of that,
including a foreboding turret set piece.
The turret is particularly prominent
during the scene where the Phantom
seduces ingénue Christine to his subopera house sewer lair.
But while Producer Cameron
Mackintosh’s tour of Phantom alters
from the original, the story and music
– including the goose-pimple inducing
title song – remain the same.
The Phantom of the Opera returns to
Overture Hall January 25- February 5,
2017. For more information or tickets,
please visit overture.org/events/

Shakespeare's
First Folio
On Display in Madison
William Shakespeare’s First Folio was published in 1623. The folio was the first
collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays (36 of them to be exact), which had been
compiled by two of his acting colleagues. Without it, performances of Macbeth, Julius
Caesar, and Twelfth Night might not exist.
Which is why the fact that the Folio is coming to Madison is big news indeed.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison has been selected as one of the 50 host sites for
First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare, the national traveling exhibition for the
Folio itself. The exhibit is courtesy of the Folger Shakespeare Library, in association
with the Cincinnati Museum Center and
the American Library Association.

The Folio will be on exhibit at the Chazen
Museum of Art, which was chosen due
to it meeting the exact requirements
necessary to showcase the folio. UWMadison Libraries partnered with the
museum to bring the exhibit to Madison.
The First Folio will be on display at
the Chazen Museum of Art November
3-December 11, 2016, with an opening
reception on Thursday, November 3 from
5:30 p.m. through 8:00 p.m. The opening

some of the best theater, dance, puppetry
and music created for young audiences
from around the world.
“Supporting the engagement of young
people in the arts is a core value of
Overture Center. We are honored [to host]

said Ted DeDee, Overture Center’s
President and CEO, adding that local
families will be able to attend at no charge.

Australia, a Brazilian company’s re-telling
of Sinbad using bamboo mobile structures,
and a newly commissioned theatrical
production from the Kennedy Center.
Growing in size each year, Showcase
2017 is expected to attract more than
500 delegates. Most events will be held

Children’s Theater of Madison
FROM THE DIRECTOR, JAMES RIDGE
My enthusiasm for Charles Dickens’ classic has not waned a jot during my association
with the play. Indeed, I find that here in 2016, after seven years of performing and
directing A Christmas Carol, I am enjoying a deeper sense of wonder at the generosity,
hope, and compassion that calls from every corner of the story. Our production this year
takes advantage of new voices and imaginations in collaboration with veterans, young
and youngish, to inspire a fresh feel in this perennial favorite at CTM. The play is our
gift to the community, and we raise a glass to you in the words of Mr. Fezziwig, “Good
friends: May this Christmas find each of you in a warm home, with warmer company, and
may the coming year find a spirit of friendship and charity in your hearts!” -Jim Ridge
FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT, SARAH DUNN
Dear Friends of CTM,
Welcome to Madison’s finest holiday tradition and CTM’s grandest production of the year!
The elegant Capitol Theater transports us back to Victorian England and fills young and
old with a series of emotions on a ghost-story of Christmas past. As you settle into your
seats, the houselights dim and the stage comes alive; please allow me to welcome you to
another production of CTM’s A Christmas Carol. A Christmas Carol tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and
his transformation into a gentler, kindlier man after visitations by the ghost of his
former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and
Future. Thank you for supporting this beautiful cultural experience and celebrating
young imagination. A round of applause to our talented staff, actors and volunteers as
we offer best wishes for an enjoyable holiday season.
Now on with the show!

Plumb Funds
Building a Solid Foundation
BUILDING A SOLID FOUNDATION
is that start to having a sound investment portfolio. The
foundation to any structure must be plumb, square and true or
the entire structure could give way.
This is why Plumb Funds begins with the foundation as it builds
your investments. At its core, your investment portfolio needs
to have a solid structure. For more than 25 years, the name
“Plumb” has been synonymous with solid and disciplined wealth
management and mutual fund goals.
The fund’s investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses must
be considered carefully before investing. The prospectus contains
this and other important information about the investment company
and it may be obtained by calling 866-987-7888 or visiting
www.plumbfunds.com. Read it carefully before investing.
