Northeastern District Leadership Academy 2017 Faculty Bios (v3 – 12/12/2016) Murray Phillips: President’s Class Murray Phillips lives in Wolfville, NS, where he is a member of the Kentville Chapter and is beginning his second year as a Society Board Member-at-large. Murray is the Society Board Representative to the Pioneer and Ontario Districts. He is Immediate Past President, Northeastern District, Past Chair of the BHS Events Committee, and is Chair & CEO of Sing Canada Harmony. After singing in a high school quartet, Murray didn’t join barbershop for several years, but he has jumped in with both feet and has over 20 years under his belt. He joined the Pierrefonds Quebec Chapter and when it merged with the Montreal Chapter, became VP Membership, Secretary, and then President, and Co-Chaired the successful Montreal 2003 International Convention. He edited the Greater Montreal Chapter Bulletin for eight years. He sang bass in Key of Eh? for 12 years, and is now Chapter Secretary and Bass Section Leader with the Dukes of Kent of the Kentville NS Chapter, having served as President for three years. Murray was an Association Executive with the Canadian Electricity Association for over 30 years and was Corporate Secretary/Treasurer. He finished his working life as a financial services advisor. On retirement, he and Mary moved to Nova Scotia, where they sing with the 100 voice Acadia University Chorus. Mary and Murray celebrated their 50th Anniversary in June and have two grown sons, a gorgeous daughter-in-law and a beautiful granddaughter. Alan Lamson: Principles of Leadership Alan Lamson, a 45 year resident of Manchester, CT, is a 36-year member of the Barbershop Harmony Society and is a member of the Manchester, CT, Lyndon, VT and Alexandria, VA chapters. He is a past president and current president of the Manchester chapter, was elected Barbershopper of the Year for the chapter twice, and Barbershopper of the Decade (1990s) for the chapter. He is a baritone in the chorus, the baritone of the 2005, 2006, and 2009 Yankee Division Senior Quartet Champions, Senior Momentum, and currently baritone of I Don’t Know Why, a 2016 District Quartet Contest qualifier. He was president of the Barbershop Harmony Society’s Northeastern District in 20032004 and, before that, served as its Executive Vice-president and Vice-president Chapter Support and Leadership Training. He is the current Vice-president Contest & Judging elect. He was the 1999 Northeastern District Barbershopper of the Year. Alan has served as a Dean and Chapter President instructor in the Society’s Chapter Officer Training School and Leadership Academy programs, selected as the Society’s Outstanding COTS Coordinator in 1998, is a Contest Administrator in the Society’s contest and judging program, has served as staff to the Northeastern District’s Harmony Explosion Camp, has served on the Society’s International Board of Directors for eight Page 1 of 5 years including serving as the Society’s President from 2011-2012. In 2016 he was selected to be a member of the Society’s Leadership Operations Planning Team. He was also Interim CEO for the Society in 2012. Alan is a member of Newcaneweng, the Northeastern District’s honorary association. He still resides in Manchester with his wife, Janet. They have two sons and five grandchildren. Alan recently retired from FLB Architecture & Planning, Inc. in East Hartford, CT. Sebastion (Sebby) Massa: Vice President of Membership With a whopping eight years of membership in the Barbershop Harmony Society, Sebby Massa has experienced quite a bit of what the BHS has to offer, and now wants to offer all he knows back to you! As the Assistant Director and VP of Membership and Chapter Development of the Hartford, CT chapter, Sebby has been on the forefront of implementing change, through all its starts and fits. As a passable Lead singer, he has competed in the Harmony Foundation Youth Quartet competition with the Timely Gents, and has also earned a Yankee Division Quartet Championship and a District 5th place medal. All of those things mean nothing when compared to his love for promoting communal singing and helping chapters realize their potential, because there's so much potential that we're not even aware is there! Joel Sutherland: Vice President of Program • • • • • • First exposed to Barbershop in High School, sang with a Gospel quartet at my church, visited the Worcester, MA chapter while attending WPI Joined the Society and the Concord, MA chapter in 2012 Competed in three International Chorus Contests (2013, 2014, 2016) Program VP 2014-Current Asst. Baritone Section Leader, member of Music Team Chapter Barbershopper of the Year 2015 Member of quartet "Sector 10" David Patterson: Building a Music Team David joined the Barbershop Harmony Society in 1961, at age 16. He has enjoyed a diverse and fulfilling career in the world of Barbershop. He was in the Society’s Judging Program for nearly 25 years. Upon leaving the Judging Program, he received the esteemed title and Award of “Judge Emeritus". He has been the Musical Director of five choruses. He was Musical Director of the, then, SOUNDS OF CONCORD (prior to them becoming VOCAL REVOLUTION), leading them to two District Championships and two appearances at the Society’s International Chorus competition. David also was Musical Director of our rival GRANITE STATESMEN chorus from Nashua, New Hampshire, leading them to two District Championships and two appearances at the Society’s International Chorus competition. Page 2 of 5 He sang Baritone in a quartet which twice qualified for the Society’s International Quartet competition. He has won 22 District Chorus Championships with 3 different choruses. He has sung and competed in a number of quartets. He has coached a number of quartets and choruses. Currently with VOCAL REVOLUTION, serving the chorus as Assistant Director and as Bass Section Leader. Joey Constantine: Marketing and PR (updated as of 12/12/2016) Joey is the NED gold medal Lead of Downtown Crossing and DRIVE quartets! He was the Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations for the Concord, MA chapter – Vocal Revolution. More about Joey – in class! (Joey is pinch hitting for Steve Salamin – who is out on medical leave. Thank you, Joey!) John Englander: Treasurer John Englander currently serves as the Treasurer for the Northeastern District Walt Lane: Secretary Walt has been a member of the Schenectady, NY Chapter for 24 years, and has sung Lead in the “Revisions” quartet since 1994. With Schenectady he has served as Secretary, VP Music & Performance, VP Chapter Development, Chapter Treasurer and Chapter President (2008-2009). For the Northeastern District, Walt has been VP Membership Development (3 Years), Executive VP (2006-2007), and District President (2008-2009). At the Society level, Walt is a COTS Instructor (Secretary Track), and was a member of the District Presidents Council (2008-9) and the District Presidents Council Representative on the Society Operations Team (2009). His many awards include Chapter BOTY, Mountain Division BOTY (2004) and District BOTY (2010). Walt is a retired Elementary and Middle School Teacher of 33 years, an American Red Cross Instructor of 30 years, and an American Red Cross Instructor Trainer of 20 years. He kayaks, bikes, hikes, and collects antique carpenter and saddle maker tools. Guy Hass: Programs for a Healthy Chapter Page 3 of 5 Guy Haas is District President, past Exec VP, DVP CSLT, DVP Marketing and PR, Chapter President, 28-year BHS Member, Baritone- Melodies & Memories. Joe Cerutti: Director’s Workshop Since 2007, Joe Cerutti has been the artistic director of the Alexandria Harmonizers (a men’s chorus founded in 1948 in association with Barbershop Harmony Society [BHS]) and the Pride of Baltimore (a women’s chorus founded in 1993 in association with Sweet Adelines International [SAI]), both of which have received highest honors in their respective organizations while under his direction. He is a certified music judge in the BHS and one of only three people in history to earn the title of "Master Director" in both Sweet Adelines International and the Barbershop Harmony Society. As director of the Harmonizers, Cerutti has led concerts and performances at the White House (including a private command performance for the President and First Lady), the Supreme Court, Carnegie Hall, and major cities across North America and abroad, including tours in China, France, and Germany. During his tenure he has prepared them for nine international contest cycles and an average of 20 performances a year, founded their annual Youth Harmony Festival, overseen their successful outreach programs to the non−a cappella choral community and non-choral a cappella community, and conducted the choral preparations for the world premiere of Andrew Lippa’s “I Am Anne Huchinson/I Am Harvey Milk” with the National Symphony Orchestra and Kristin Chenoweth. During 2011-2014, Cerutti organized, promoted, and directed the No Borders Youth Chorus, an annual honor chorus of 150 young men, recruited and auditioned specifically for a one-day rehearsal and concert at Carnegie Hall. Over the course of four years, No Borders had 457 participants representing six countries, 43 U.S. States and Canadian Provinces, 182 grade schools, colleges and universities, and 105 choral ensembles from around the world. Cerutti has served as judge, faculty, and clinician for several choral festivals and conductor roundtables across North America, Europe/UK, Australia and New Zealand including seven performances at Carnegie Hall. He served on the BHS Board of Directors in 2012-2013 and is currently on staff at the Barbershop Harmony Society as the Program Manager for Outreach Development, overseeing the distribution of over $250K in annual grants to nonprofit projects for community engagement in singing. Cerutti is a lifetime member of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), a charter member of the National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO), and holds memberships in the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and Chorus America. He holds a Mus.B. in Music Education and Jazz Commercial Music from Five Towns College and a M.M. in Choral Conducting from Boston University, where he studied under Ann Howard Jones, Jamison Marvin, and Joseph Flummerfelt. Page 4 of 5 Michael Klein Michael is a Past President of the Northeastern District and a long time society member having served many roles both at the chapter and district level. Terry Reynolds Terry Reynolds has been a member of the Alexandria Harmonizers since 1992 and has served in numerous musical and leadership positions. He is the new Executive Director for 2016 and served as President for 2014-2015. He has been Associate and Assistant Director for over 20 years and has also served as the Music & Performance VicePresident and as Front Row Captain. He has held numerous positions with the Barbershop Harmony Society serving on the Leadership Operations Team, Chorus Director Development Committee, as a Certified Trainer for Chorus Director Workshop Intensive (CDWI), and on the Leadership Academy Training Faculty for President and for Music and Performance. Terry works as a Program Manager for a government IT consulting company, implementing large system integration projects. He earned a BS in Computer Science from Bowling Green State University. He gained interest in Barbershop while singing with the Bowling Green Men’s Chorus under the direction of Richard Mathey and worked summers performing with a barbershop quartet at amusement parks. He has sung in numerous quartets in the Mid-Atlantic and Johnny Appleseed districts. Page 5 of 5
