Ulysses S. Grant was present
during the Mexican-American War in
1846. Although he was only a
quartermaster, he managed to see
most of the battles, and even fought in
a few. The war ended in 1848.
Ulysses resigned from the military a
short time after. He tried
unsuccessfully to get other jobs, so he
rejoined the army during the Civil War.
Ulysses began as brigadier general,
but soon became the general of the
Union Army. He forced the
Confederate general, Robert E. Lee,
to surrender in 1865.

Ulysses S. Grant was an average president. He was
popular due to winning the Civil War. Ulysses only made a
few important decisions in his terms. Ulysses was opposed
to slavery, as he fought in the Union Army, and made many

to vote. Grant signed many acts to help the current
economy. The main act was the Resumption of Specie Act in
1875. This allowed paper money to be exchanged for gold
and silver coins. Ulysses S. Grant was remembered in
history. He appears on the fifty dollar bill, and his old farm is
still standing, open to the public.
There were many problems during Ulysses
S. Grant’s terms as president. Many groups were
in existence that opposed the citizenship of African
Americans. They especially tried to remove their
right to vote. Grant had a lot of trust in his friends
and cabinet members. However, many of his
workers soon became corrupted. Even the vice
president, Schuyler Colfax, was involved in one
scandal.
