Aluminum stearate surfactant is a powdered defoamer used primarily in
water-base muds.

Applications
Aluminum stearate surfactant is insoluble in water. To achieve the best results, it should be mixed with diesel, low-toxicity mineral oil or a
synthetic base fluid and slowly dripped into the system.
Normally, 5 to 10 lb/100 bbl of mud gives adequate defoaming results. Mix 1-2 viscosity cups of Aluminum stearate per 5-gal diesel, low-toxicity
mineral oil or synthetic base fluid prior to adding to the drilling fluid.
Advantages
•  Widely available, economical defoaming agent
•  Concentrated chemical that is very effective at low treatment levels
•  Can be used in most water-base drilling fluids
Limitations
•  Not recommended for use in invert emulsion mud systems (oil-base mud or synthetic-base mud)

Packaging and Storage
Aluminum stearate surfactant is packaged in multi-wall, paper sacks with plastic liners. Packing container sizes vary based on local area of
purchase.
Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place.
