Plant Cells 1. a. Photosynthesis happens in the Chloroplast cells. b. Water and nutrients are transported in the Conducting cell. c. The cell that absorbs water from the soil is the root. d. Guard cells open and close the stomata. 2. An organelle is a very small (Microscopic) organ that is inside a cell. 3. a. The cell nucleus is the control centre of the cell. It controls all chemical reactions and also controls the growth and reproduction of the cell. b. The cell wall is made of a rigid material know as cellulose and it provides the cells structure and strength. c. Chloroplast has a green chemical in it called chlorophyll and it stores light that is required for photosynthesis. 4. The purpose of chlorophyll in a plant is that it traps the appropriate amount light that is necessary for photosynthesis. 5. a. The specialised plant cell that is hairy is the root hair cell and it uses this hair to absorb extra water needed for photosynthesis. b. The specialised plant cell that is the ‘the gatekeeper’ is the guard cell and it controls that amount of water lost through the stomata. c. The specialised plant cell that is a ‘transporter’ is conducting cell that transports water and nutrients. 6. a. “I’m green” – Chlorophyll – it helps trap light that is required for photosynthesis. b. “I’m found in cell walls” – Cellulose – Helps provide structural support and makes the cell more rigid. c. “I’m found in the vacuole” – Food, water and nutrients – this is where the food and nutrients are held and without it the cell would die. 7. Photosynthesis is how green plants make their own food: a. the chemicals that are needed to perform photosynthesis are water, carbon dioxide and sunlight. b. The chemicals that this reaction produces are water and oxygen. c. The sugar that the plant uses to get energy is called glucose. d. The reaction gets its energy from sunlight. 8. a. If a plant didn't have guard cells the plant would lose unnecessary amounts of water. b. If the cell didn’t have cellulose it would not be rigid and would easily collapse. c. If a cell didn’t have chlorophyll the plant would not be able to produce energy because it would not be able to trap sufficient amounts of light to perform photosynthesis. 9. a. Most plants are green because the chlorophyll in side them is green. b. Plants must have thicker cell walls than animals because animals have a bone structure to provide them with a rigid frame but for a plant the cell wall is their rigid frame. c. Photosynthetic cells are found on the top of the plant because that is the direction that all the light is coming from, not much comes from underneath. d. There are two conducting cells that form two paths to get into the cell so that they can get water from the top that lands on them and the other lets water get in from the bottom through the roots. 10. There are more animal cells than pants cells because the animal body is much more complex and has many for organs, veins and cells that all need catering for and the same cell for all of them would not provide enough. 11. Animals do not need to carry out photosynthesis lie plants because they get their energy from either eating plant that has perform photosynthesis or eating another animal that has eaten a plant.
