Page 1, below bellwork What is Physical Geography? The branch of geography dealing with natural features and processes. “NATURE – Land, water, climate, and living things” What is Human Geography? Parts of Location Relative location-One object’s location in relation to another object. Nebraska is west of Iowa, or where your house is from McDonalds. Parts of Location Continued Absolute location-Exact coordinates using latitude and longitude, OR an address 1. LOCATION: Where is it? Why is it located there? Absolute Relative Location Location Is given in degrees of latitude and longitude (global location) or a street address (local location). o Paris, France is 48 North Latitude and 2o East Longitude. The White House is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Relative location depends upon point of reference. Eg. Near, far, a short drive. Described by landmarks, time, direction or distance. (important/well known places or things) Page 3 of NB Place Place-is used to describe the physical and human characteristics of a location. 2. PLACE: What is it like? Physical Characteristics Landforms (mountains, plains, etc.), bodies of water (oceans, lakes, bays, etc.), ecosystems (soil, plants, animals, and climate) 2. PLACE: What is it like? Human Characteristics Bridges, roads, buildings, culture, languages, beliefs. All places have features that distinguish them from other places. Page 4 of NB Human-Environment Interaction Human-environment interaction-Studies the way humans impact the environment. Humans depend on the environment. Humans change the environment. Humans adapt to the environment. 3. HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION How do people interact with and change their environment? We depend on the environment. We adapt to the environment. Ex. People depend on rivers for water and transportation. Ex. We adapt to the environment by wearing clothing suitable for summer (shorts) and winter (coats), rain and shine. We modify the environment. Functional Regions-Determined by connections, like the delivery area of a pizza place. 5. REGIONS What are regions and how are they useful? Regions can be defined on the basis of physical and human characteristics Geographers divide the world into regions to help them interpret information.
