The Lightning Thief and Other Myths Dehesa Charter School – Riverside Learning Center Instructor: Linda Montes Phone: (909) 261-4204 E-mail: [email protected] Class Hour: 10:15 – 11:15 Introduction I am so excited about the opportunity to teach your children. Greek mythology is such a fun and interesting topic to study and I hope to make it both enjoyable and educational for your children. Course Description This class will focus heavily on oral skills. Because the Greek myths were passed down mostly through oral stories, I’ve constructed the class to mimic that tradition. In addition to reading “The Lightning Thief” we will be learning about the various gods, goddesses, and creatures that make up Greek mythology. We will be discussing why these myths are in existence, the impact they had of ancient culture and their impact today. Furthermore, we will be discussing the book and looking how the author has crafted the story to help keep the attention of his audience. Lots to learn! Homework There will be some homework this semester. Due to time, the students will read “The Lightning Thief” independently at home and prepare for our class discussion. I’ve made folders for each of the students to keep track of our discussion. Each week I will give them a new “Think Page” to help them prepare for our class discussion. These pages will include the chapters they need to read that week and questions to get them thinking. Their answers do not need to be long or detailed, just enough to help them remember what the chapter is about so that they can contribute to the discussion. Please ensure that they complete their “Think Page” and/or discuss the questions with them each week and bring their folder to class. Should other projects arise, I will send home written instructions, but most, if not all, projects will be done in class. Greek Days Periodically through the class we will have Greek Days, especially as we get to the middle and end of the class. On these days, I will be encouraging all students to come in costume and we will be telling the stories. On the final Greek Day, we will be snacking on foods the Ancient Greeks would have eaten and talking about our favorite myths. The week before a Greek Day, I will be assigning some of the students in the class a myth that the will share with the class. Their job is to learn the myth that week and be prepared to tell the story to the rest of the class. This allows all of the students to participate as well as giving students a chance to practice oral skills.
