Cells and the Microscope 1. State Who: a) the first people to invent the microscope included Robert Hooke and Anton Van Leeuwenhoek. b) The person who invented the microscope similar to the one we use today was Robert Hooke. c)The Scientist Robert Hooke discovered the cell theory. d)Theodor Schwean thought that cells were not just there but were produced. 2.State who saw the first: a) Robert hooke was the first to see cells b) Anton Van Leeuwenhoek saw the first animal cell. c) Anton Van Leeuwenhoek discovered bacteria d) Robert Brown discovered the cell nucleus e) Rudolph Kolliker was the first to discover the cell mitochondria. 3. List the three main points of the cell theory. ● ● ● All living things are made of cells New cells are created when other cells divide in two All cells are similar to each other, but are not identical 4. State another name for the eyepiece. Another name for the eyepiece on a microscope is ocular lens. 5. State what SEM and TEM stand for. TEM stands for Transmission electron microscope and SEM stands for Scanning Electron Microscope. 6. Explain why Cells were not known about before the invention of the microscope. Cells were not known about because in order to see a sell you need a microscope as Cells are tiny and are to small for humans to see with the naked eye. 7. Explain why Hooke named the ‘boxes’ he saw in cork ‘cells’. Hooke called them ‘Cells’ because they looked like the Cells in which the monks of the time lived in. 8. Define the following terms. a) Microscopic So small only to be visible by microscope. b)Specimen an individual animal, plant, peice of mineral, etc. c)Image a representation of the external source of something. d)Field of view The area in which you can see something. 9. Use one word to describe a cell Miniscule 10. Explain what magnification of ×10 means in terms of Specimen and image The term 10 times means how much you have zoomed onto the specimen and the image gets refined. 11.The objective lens should never be moved downwards while looking through the eyepiece. Propose a reason why. I believe the Objective lens should never be moved downwards while looking through it because when the lamp shines up you could get blind because the lens is magnified at the light. Another reason is that it is not an effective way of focusing on your specimen/subject. 12. Identify The parts of the compound microscope a) Eyepiece b) Objective lens c) Stage d) Lamp e) Base f) Arm g) Coarse focusing knob h) Fine Focusing knob 13. Copy the table below and calculate the missing values. Answer are in black. Eyepiece Magnification Objective lens magnification Total magnification x10 x10 x100 x5 x100 x500 x20 x40 x800 x3 x100 x300 x30 x20 x600
