Welcome to all who are visiting St Mary’s for the first time today. It is our
hope that you will find this church a place where you can encounter God,
enjoy worship and make new friends.

me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by
my name. I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people,
which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts; A
people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in
gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick; Which remain among the
graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine’s flesh, and broth of
abominable things is in their vessels; Which say, Stand by thyself, come not

Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law
until faith would be revealed. Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until
Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has
come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus you
are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into
Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek,
there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all
of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are
Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise.

Gospel: Luke 8.26-39
When the Gospel is announced:
Glory to you, O Lord.
Then they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite
Galilee. As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met
him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house
but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted
at the top of his voice, ‘What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most
High God? I beg you, do not torment me’— for Jesus had commanded the
unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him;
he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would
break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) Jesus then
asked him, ‘What is your name?’ He said, ‘Legion’; for many demons had
entered him. They begged him not to order them to go back into the
abyss. Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the
demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission.
Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd
rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. When the
swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and
in the country. Then people came out to see what had happened, and when
they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone
sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were
afraid. Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been
possessed by demons had been healed. Then all the people of the
surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they
were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. The man
from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but
Jesus sent him away, saying, ‘Return to your home, and declare how much
God has done for you.’ So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city
how much Jesus had done for him.
At the end of the Gospel the deacon says
This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Renewal of marriage vows by Gerard and Lynda White on their tenth
wedding anniversary
The couple stand at the front and the president says
We have come together in the presence of God to give thanks with Gerard
and Lynda for ten years of married life, to rejoice together and to ask for
God’s blessing. As our Lord Jesus Christ was himself a guest at the wedding
in Cana of Galilee, so through his Spirit he is with us now. Marriage is a gift
of God in creation and a means of his grace; it is given that a husband and
wife may comfort and help each other, living faithfully together in times of
need as well as in plenty, in sadness and in joy, in sickness and in health; it
is given that with delight and tenderness they may know each other in love.
In marriage a couple belong together and live life in the community; it is a
way of life created and hallowed by God, that all should honour. Therefore
we pray with them that, strengthened and guided by God, they may
continue to fulfill his purpose for their life together.
The president says to the couple
I invite you now to recall the vows that you made at your wedding.
Husband and wife face each other and hold hands.
The husband says
I, Gerard, took you, Lynda, to be my wife;
The wife says
I, Lynda, took you, Gerard, to be my husband;
The couple say together
to have and to hold from that day forward,
for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish,
till death us do part, according to God’s holy law,
and this was our solemn vow.
Today, in the presence of our church family and friends,
we affirm our continuing commitment to this vow.
The president says to the congregation
Will you, the church family and friends of Gerard and Lynda, continue to
support and uphold them in their marriage now and in the years to come?
We will.
The couple touch each other’s wedding rings and say
I gave you this ring as a sign of our marriage.
With my body I honour you, all that I am I give to you,
and all that I have I share with you,
within the love of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The couple kneel together. The president prays
God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit,
bless, preserve and keep you;
the Lord mercifully grant you the riches of his grace
that you may please him both in body and soul,
and, living together in faith and love,
may receive the blessings of eternal life.
Amen.

The Peace
God is love. Those who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.

During this hymn Gerard and Lynda bring bread and wine to the altar.
A collection is taken so that those who do not give by standing order may
make a donation if they wish. Gift Aid envelopes are available from the

The Lord be with you

We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

The Lord’s Prayer
As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours

The Breaking of the Bread
The president breaks the consecrated bread, saying
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body,
The Communion
The president invites the people to communion, saying
Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
Happy are those who are called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,
but only say the word, and I shall be healed.
All who normally receive communion in their own church are warmly
invited to receive holy communion. If you prefer to receive a blessing,
please hold this leaflet in your hand as a sign to the clergy.
The reply to the words “The Body of Christ” and “The Blood of Christ” is a
clear Amen as we receive the risen Lord in our outstretched hands.
During the distribution the choir sings the Agnus Dei.

Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of
your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies
to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live
and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

Contemplative Prayer is at 6 pm tonight in the chapel, followed by St
Mary’s Book Club at 6.45 pm in the Parish Room. We will be discussing
Surprised by Hope by Tom Wright. Newcomers welcome, whether or not
you have had time to read the book.
Next Sunday, 30th June, is our Dedication Festival. The preacher at the
10.30 eucharist will be Canon John Ovenden, vicar of St Mary’s 1985-98
and more recently Chaplain to the Queen. We will have a bring and share
lunch after the service – please sign the list on the stewards’ table.
There will also be Solemn Evensong at 6 pm and Sung Compline at 9 pm
on 30th June to celebrate the dedication of our parish church.

contributions for lunch, but donations (at consumers' discretion) to the
boiler appeal gratefully accepted.
Fortnightly Sunday lunches at Mora Burnet House in Winchester Road,
near Swiss Cottage station: guests welcome to come. £3.50 per meal.
