History: Chapter 10 - The Kingdom of Kush 1. Kush - Nubia, like Egypt, is referred to as Upper Nubia and Lower Nubia; Upper Nubia being nearer the source of the River Nile, and Lower Nubia sharing a border with Egypt. In 1900 B.C.E., an inscription mentioned the name Kush and after 1550 B.C.E. the Egyptians began to use the name Kush to refer to Upper Nubia. Kush was known for its rich gold mines. “Nub” means gold in Egyptian. Once the ancient kingdom of Kush, Nubia is the stretch of land next to the Nile from Aswan down to Khartoum in the south. Nubians are depicted in many tomb paintings and reliefs, usually as mercenaries or traders. Nubians still have distinct traditions, architecture and languages, even though many migrated either to Aswan and Kom Ombo or south to Sudan after Lake Nasser swamped much of their traditional homeland. 2. Meroe was the center of Kushite civilization for over 1,000 years. They were well known for producing iron. They used iron to make weapons like spears, arrows, and swords. Kush returns to its African Roots - ax hoe after splitting from Egypt, Kush artwork, clothing, and buildings no longer imitated Egyptian styles. They wrote and spoke Meroitic (after Meroe) which had its own alphabet. 9. Kandakes - a powerful female who co-ruled Kush with her husband and sons.
