History: Chapter 10 - The Kingdom of Kush
1. Kush
- Nubia, like Egypt, is referred to as Upper Nubia and Lower Nubia; Upper Nubia
being nearer the source of the River Nile, and Lower Nubia sharing a border with Egypt. In
1900 B.C.E., an inscription mentioned the name Kush and after 1550 B.C.E. the Egyptians
began to use the name Kush to refer to Upper Nubia.
Kush was known for its rich gold
mines. “Nub” means gold in Egyptian.
Once the ancient kingdom of Kush, Nubia is the stretch of land next to the Nile from Aswan down to
Khartoum in the south. Nubians are depicted in many tomb paintings and reliefs, usually as mercenaries or
traders. Nubians still have distinct traditions, architecture and languages, even though many migrated either
to Aswan and Kom Ombo or south to Sudan after Lake Nasser swamped much of their traditional homeland.

decided to make a new capital in Moroe, 300 miles south of Napata, farther from Egypt.
Meroe was the center of Kushite civilization for over 1,000 years. They were well
known for producing iron. They used iron to make weapons like spears, arrows, and
