Geo-English lesson: Let’s discover Italy!! Italy is easy to recognize on any world map! Do you know why? Because the country is shaped like a highheeled boot. It looks like the boot is kicking a ball, which is the island of Sicily, don’t you think? Much of Italy is covered by mountains. In the North, the mountain range of the Alps separates Italy from the other European countries France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The Dolomite mountains are a part of the Alps . The Po Valley, just south of the Alps mountain, is the basin of the Po River. Po is the longest river of Italy. It is fertile farm land. The Apennine mountains cut down the center of Italy, stretching from north to south, dividing the east and west coasts. Italy includes two large islands: Sicily and Sardinia. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean, with active volcanoes, Etna is the most famous. Sardinia is basically mountain rising out of the ocean. Italy also has two independent countries within its borders. Vatican City is the center for the Roman Catholic Church, and is the world's smallest country. San Marino, on the north east coast, not far from our city Pesaro, is an independent republic. Italy is divided into 20 regions. The regions are divided into smaller provinces. The largest of these regions by population are Lombardy, Campania, Lazio, and Sicily. The largest by area are Sicily, Piedmont, Sardinia, and Lombardy. By the way! The Marche is our region! It is in the central part of Italy, it is divided in 5 provinces we live in the province of Pesaro Urbino. Its name means "lands along the border”. The Marche is on the east coast on the Adriatic sea. It has got the Sibillini Mountain chain of the Appenines in the west. The region is characterised by rolling hills Pesaro-Urbino is our province and you can see many beautiful landscapes, towns and villages Let’s come back to Italy!!!!!! Its Capital is Rome It is a Republic Its name is Repubblica Italiana (Italian Republic) or simply: Italia, its nickname is «Bel Paese» that means beautiful country It became independent on 17 March 1861; but Italy was not unified until 1870 Its Currency is euro (EUR) The Italian flag, called the "Tricolore", has three vertical stripes, it was adopted on January 1, 1948. The green represents hope and the green hills of Italy. The white can stand for faith or the snow-capped Alps. The red represents charity and the blood spilt during the war for independence. THE ITALIAN NATIONAL SONG IS: IL CANTO DEGLI ITALIANI (THE SONG OF THE ITALIANS) WRITTEN BY MAMELI Italians are famous for their inventions and discoveries... The Italian explorers Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci discovered the Americas while Marco Polo explored the East. Leonardo da Vinci was a scientist and an artist, he painted «La gioconda», Galileo Galilei invented the telescope and Alessandro Volta that studied electricity, hence the name “Volt”. ITALY IS ALSO FAMOUS FOR ITS ARTISTS AND POETS LIKE: MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI , DANTE ALIGHIERI AND MANY OTHERS. THERE ARE ALSO FAMOUS ARTISTS FROM THE MARCHE AS RAFFAELLO, THE PAINTER FROM URBINO, AND ROSSINI THE MUSICIAN FROM OUR CITY PESARO! GIACOMO LEOPARDI THE POET FROM RECANATI HOPE YOU ENJOY ITALY!!!
