Let’s discover Italy!!
Italy is easy to recognize on any world
map! Do you know why?
Because the country is shaped like a highheeled boot. It looks like the boot is kicking a
ball, which is the island of Sicily, don’t you think?
Much of Italy is covered by mountains. In the North, the
mountain range of the Alps separates Italy from the other
European countries France, Switzerland, Austria and
Slovenia. The Dolomite mountains are a part of the Alps .
The Po Valley, just south of the Alps mountain, is
the basin of the Po River. Po is the longest river
of Italy. It is fertile farm land.
The Apennine mountains cut down the center of Italy,
stretching from north to south, dividing the east and west
coasts.
Italy includes two large islands: Sicily and Sardinia. Sicily
is the largest island in the Mediterranean, with active
volcanoes, Etna is the most famous. Sardinia is
basically mountain rising out of the ocean.
Italy also has two independent countries within its
borders. Vatican City is the center for the Roman
Catholic Church, and is the world's smallest country.
San Marino, on the north east coast, not far from our
city Pesaro, is an independent republic.
