NO GLASSES. NO CONTACTS. KNOW YOUR OPTIONS. I am tired of reading glasses! Dr Cheryl Lee Medical Director and Ophthalmic Surgeon Pacific Eye Centre Cataract, Retinal and Implantable Contact Lens Specialist MBBS (Singapore), FRCOphth (UK) Dr Cheryl Lee brings back with her more than 10 years of international experience in the field of ophthalmology. She received a wide range of specialist training in England at Cheltenham, Cambridge and Bristol, in America at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, and in France at the Pitie-Salpetriere hospital in Paris. The three main areas of work for Dr Lee are the Implantable contact lens (ICL™), a reversible vision correction hence superior to LASIK, multifocal intraocular lenses that are customised for you to get rid of your reading glasses depending on your needs and management of dry eyes which requires an individualized understanding of a patient's systemic and eye health. As a retinal surgeon, Dr Lee is also fully experienced in the management of diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and ocular inflammatory disease like uveitis. She is also on the expert panel for the Implantable Contact Lens™, the only Asian lady doctor on the panel who trains the surgeons internationally. Dr Lee’s academic accolades include the Gold Medal and Book Prize in Ophthalmology from the National University of Singapore, the Marie Comer Anglian Prize in Ophthalmology from the University of Cambridge and she achieved distinction in the Alcon Glaucoma UK Competition in 2005. ‘I have a paradigm shift looking at eye care. My responsibility is to help you see better but what I do will also help you look younger. For example, by helping you get rid of your reading glasses, you see better and on top of that you look younger because reading glasses tend to make you look older. So I make life more practical for you but the added bonus is you also look better. Another example, with age, you develop drooping of upper eyelids which make you look older and it blocks your vision. When I lift the droopy lids for you, you will see better and on top of that, you look younger.’ Are you having trouble reading your SMS? Reading vision problem suggests a start of ageing and hardening of your natural lens which is the beginning of a cataract. You are not alone, it is just a matter of time before we all develop a cataract. About 20,000 cataract operations are performed in Singapore every year. It is the commonest surgery performed in the world. The good news is that once a cataract is removed it does not grow back again and you may never have to wear glasses for seeing far or reading your SMS ever again. Which is the best lens for you? Cataract surgery involves removing a person’s clouded natural lens and replacing it with an Intraocular Lens (IOL). The IOL may be a conventional one, which allows you to focus clearly at one distance only, or a premium IOL which is good for distance AND near vision. Premium IOL will provide you with a full range of vision, thus minimizing your dependence on glasses. In the past, the only IOLs available were monofocal lenses. A monofocal IOL provides excellent vision but only at one set distance. This means you would still need to wear glasses for reading. Today, I am able to offer you the choice of a multifocal IOL. Multifocal IOLs correct both your distance vision and your presbyopia or near vision after cataract surgery. For the vast majority of patients, having a multifocal IOL means that you will be able to see at distance and up close without being dependent on glasses. So, patients choosing to have a multifocal IOL will likely find that they can drive, watch television as well as read without the need for glasses. Over 95 % of our patients choose the multifocal IOL so we have a lot of experience with the different brands of IOLs. COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MULTIFOCAL IOLs Are there different types of multifocal IOLs? Yes. Multifocal IOLs come in varied shapes and their optical qualities are different. To help us come to a decision on which IOL is best suited for you, a questionnaire about your visual requirements and a detailed chat about your needs with Dr Lee in the clinic are essential so that the IOL is personalised to your work and hobbies. My friends need stronger reading glasses as they get older. If I get the multifocal IOLs implanted now, does that mean that I have to wear glasses later on? No. The reason for the change in the glasses prescription is mainly because of worsening of the cataract. Once the cataract is removed, it will not recur hence your prescription remains stable. Can everyone have multifocal IOLs? No. The eye must be healthy and you will need to go through a series of assessments to ensure that. I have had LASIK. Can I still have the multifocal IOLs? Not all eyes that have undergone LASIK will be suitable for multifocal IOLs. LASIK changes the shape and thickness of the cornea and it also causes dry eyes. LASIK has permanently reformed your cornea so post-LASIK eye needs to be evaluated carefully. We have had good results and are in a position to help you decide if you would do well. For this reason, we are cautious for patients who want to have LASIK as it does have impact on your future options once presbyopia sets in. We would advise the Implantable Contact Lens (ICL™) as it is a reversible option for those who are thinking of having LASIK done. (Please look up our Implantable Contact lens™ brochure for more information) Do I need to adjust the position of my eye to see far and near just like when I am wearing my progressive glasses? No. With the IOL, your brain will learn to adjust the focus by a reflex change in the size of the pupil. Will I need glasses after the multifocal IOL implant? You will experience greater overall freedom allowing you to participate in most daily activities without dependence glasses. How long can the IOL stay in the eye? The IOL is intended to remain in place indefinitely without any maintenance. You can indulge in activities like diving, facials, high impact sports and taking airplanes with peace of mind. What is the downtime of the surgery? The surgery takes about 10 minutes and we expect you to see well enough to watch TV and read on your iPad on the same day. "We help you See better and Look better" Leon Khoo Having new and younger eyes does great wonders especially when you love Go Karting!!! I am able to see and concentrate better when I’m on the circuit. Thanks, Cheryl for such a great job done and i feel younger and also look younger!!! Johnny Ng I used to have to grapple with my glasses the moment I woke up, could not really go shopping and tried on a new pair of shades in front of the mirror and be sure of whether it suited me. I always had to tolerate with my glasses slipping down my oily face during outdoor activities. All that are things in the past now. The evening sky of St Kilda’s in Melbourne looks much prettier without my glasses. Thanks to Dr Cheryl Lee and her team. Rosemary James Growing up, I prided myself as I was the only one among us 5 siblings who did not require spectacles. However, when the unmentionable age number loomed before me, I realised that with each passing year, the distance I had to hold my mobile phone or any reading materials went further and further till my arms could stretch no more. My use of reading glasses was confined only to the home as using it in public puts the 'old age' into reality. Neither did I like the idea of Lasik surgery. So when I chanced upon this multifocal lens implant I realised it was exactly what I needed. Consultations with Dr Cheryl Lee made me very comfortable and confident in placing my full trust in her to correct my vision. The procedure was done very quickly with almost no down time. No more squinting or adjusting of reading materials to enable me to read. The full effect of my pair of wonderful implantable multi focal lens dawned on me when I received the latest copy of the Ikea catalogue. I could read the descriptions right down to the minute print of price of each item; something I was totally unable to do in previous years without the aid of reading glasses. I am glad I made the decision and took this step. Now make yours! Lucille Lim My husband and I are both sports people and we are always relying on contact lenses when we run or when are golfing. We have been to talks on LASIK before but were sceptical about going through the process. When we saw the advertisement on implant of lens, we thought it would be good for us to know more and after that session, we both decided to go through IOL. I personally do not regret doing this. I had good support from my husband and the doctor and nurses at Pacific Eye. They were very professional and have always extended their help to both of us. I am very happy with the whole experience and would recommend this to people who are both long and short sighted and experience cataract problem. I can now read clearly, do my work on the computer and do not have the hassle of wearing spectacles. I can enjoy my sports without worrying about tripping as I can see clearly and not feeling clumsy. This was the right move for me and I can enjoy runs, sports and even vacation. The hassle that I have to handle for the past years. Thank you Dr Cheryl Lee and the team of wonderful people. David & Jay Chong Dear Dr Cheryl, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We thank God for leading us to you to give us renewed eye sight through your excellent skills and professionalism. We also wish to thank your wonderful team of staff who have made us feel so assured and rested from our first visit till after the surgery. For me (Jay), when I opened my eyes after surgery (I did not even know that the surgery was over when the nurse woke me up), I did not feel any pain or discomfort. In fact, I was so amazed by the burst of vibrant colours around me… A day after the surgery, I can work on the computer and read without glasses! Wow! Such liberty! As the days past, my eye sight to see both near and far improves day by day. For me, this is truly the best birthday present! My new eyes! We are already sharing this great news to our colleagues, friends and even sales assistants. My advice to everyone is – Go for it! Live the abundant life!
